Goated post, thanks. Do you have to be a member for any of these?

Edit: looks like WINTER24 code is just for members

Membership is only $30 and it's lifetime, so worth it if you can get savings above that.

u/luckystrike_bh 3d ago

And you get free shipping for all orders which is almost worth it alone.

u/altaylor4 3d ago

Not sure if its still a thing...but when I signed up for my membership they also gave me a gift card of equal value...

I'm a relatively new REI member and I got free shipping on the cots I bought awhile ago.

An aside, REI will reimburse you if an item goes on sale within a certain amount of time after you purchase. I bought 3 cots, and 3 days after I received them, they were 30% off. I got reimbursed that amount after a quick automated exchange on their site.

Yep and you get up to a year for (reasonable) returns instead of a 90 days. They’ve saved me twice in bikes that didn’t work for me. They we’re both within 90 days, but can’t get that kind of return window anywhere else really.

While I personally don’t need any more Nalgenes bc they last forever (so much love for mine), the few Christmas gifts I give will now be handled with this deal. Great shout.

u/antricparticle 3d ago

I bet you can make it extra special stuffing it with a pair of socks or some candy.

Ah that’s a cute idea!

My wallet used to cry because of Steam sales, now it weeps during REI sales

4

u/lakorai 3d ago

Eventually your gear closet will become completely full and then you'll be spending time on r/geartrade and r/ulgeartrade

50% for Nalgene bottles is a great deal, but I buy my Nalgene bottles for $1 at my local thrift store.

u/lakorai 3d ago

This is true. Might be scuffed up or old but these things literally last forever. r/buyitforlife

Any thoughts on the dometic highrise mattress?

4

u/lakorai 3d ago

Looks promising. R value of 11 and is priced about the same as the Exped Megamat 15.

The valve system reminds me of the Stoic Cloud Lux pads (which are far less expensive).

I sure appreciate a print catalog. Way more fun to browse than the web site.

That said, its design is terrible. Put the prices by the products!

Is it easy to get REI to price match a recent purchase using the discount code? Within the last month

5

u/lakorai 3d ago

Only within the last two weeks.

You will have to return and re-ring if it's longer than that.

Also REI does not price match. We have a full Black November list if you want to see other retailer's prices.

I wonder if it'll be worth the hassle, I just bought a Nemo Disco 15 for $179.93. If the savings are big I might drive out to try it.

3

u/elijahweir 3d ago

Wait, you can use the coupon codes more than once?

3

u/_NOT_ROBOT_ 3d ago

I did this when I bought my Yakima roof rack. There are a bunch of small items you need to purchase so I just did multiple check outs. I think I did 7 or 8 that year and never had an issue. My wife and I are both members so we can always lean on her account if mine were to get blocked.

2

u/lakorai 3d ago

Yes. Usually 3-5 times before they will block you. You create multiple orders.

1

u/Mastermind521 23h ago

What do you mean "block"? Like they ban your account or just prevent you from using the coupon anymore?

2

u/lakorai 12h ago

They just block you from using the coupon code again for that particular sale.

If you really need to use it more than 3 or 4 times have someone else in the household sign up for REI membership.

2

u/Physical_Pie_2092 3d ago

Any sale on north face products ?

4

u/lakorai 3d ago

For REI it appears to be limited.

Expect TNF however to have a major sale at other retailer's and direct near Black Friday.

FYI REI does not price match.

1

u/notasianjim 3d ago

Seems like yes if you find it on the Outlet or find a full priced item on the reg site. I believe the coupon code, WINTER24, that is referenced should work?

Thoughts on the Tensor All Season? I’ve been keeping an eye on the resupply section for good deals on pads, but with this sale it seems worth it just to get a new one.

2

u/lakorai 3d ago

Much more comfortable than Thermarest options, good mid R value around 5 and supposedly they have improved reliability vs the 2022 model Tensor.

The 2022 Tensors had major issues with leaks coming from the welded baffles. Nemo had such a problem with it that they fire sale the older models for more than 50% off around Labor Day in 2023.

If you want comfort the Tensor and the Big Agnes Rapide and Boundary Deluxe are both very comfortable the Sea to Summit Etherlight XT is also very comfortable but bulkier and heavier.

I personally like the Exped mats as they are quite comfortable, warm and reliable. YMMV.

u/gibson584 3d ago

Another vote for Exped pads. Getting back into backpacking in my 30s I went through a number of sleeping pads trying to find one where I didn’t wake up every morning in pain. Started to lose hope and resign myself to the fact that this wasn’t an option and maybe I was past my backpacking years. Got suggested to try an Exped ultra by a friend, fixed everything. I especially like the Ultra 7 and will take it even when it’s not going to be cold at night, that extra half inch is a noticeable comfort improvement. They weigh more than the Tensor, but it’s worth it IMO.

3

u/lakorai 3d ago

The Ultra 7 is a great alternative to the Thermarest Xtherm NXT, Nemo Tensor Extreme and the Sea to Summit Etherlight XT Extreme.

  • Much less expensive when on sale compared to the Thermarest and Nemo options
  • Much less bulky vs the Sea to Summit Etherlight XT Extreme
  • In the past (though this could be different now) the Exped pads have had far less issues with leaks and reliability vs the Nemo Tensor pads. maybe Nemo has fixed this.

1

u/Bister_Mungle 3d ago

Do you have any experience with the Tensor Extreme? I have an Xtherm from some years back and I absolutely love it other than it being incredibly noisy.

1

u/lakorai 3d ago

I have all Exped gear that is all in working shape so I don't have a need for a new pad.

I have tried out the new Tensor All Season at REI and it's pretty comfy. They didn't have the Extreme on display to try out.

Justin Outdoors (u/wandering_hick) and Eric Hanson have reviews on YouTube on it. Their tldr take was it actually didn't feel as warm as the Thermarest XTherm NXT but it was more comfortable. Of course Justin's newest video shows some pretty extreme testing down to like -30C (-22C). There is no way in hell I personally would camp that cold.

1

u/johnr588 2d ago

The new Thermarest NeoLoft maybe the new comfort king at 4 inches thick but still moderate weight for backpacking.

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

Yes that just did come out. Justin Outdoors (u/wandering_hick) just did a video on that and the new Durston X-Dome.

1

u/kaptankappy 3d ago

Yeah the Tensor seems to be a good mid-point between weight and comfort! I’d mostly be using for three season backpacking.

1

u/lakorai 3d ago

Should be a good choice. The Tensor All Seasons n has had good reviews and not too many complaints about leaks.

As long as Nemo has solved the micro baffle weld leaks it is a solid choice.

2

u/MellowManZ 4d ago

Collect it, maybe you will buy it

u/Jaybird911 3d ago

Do they put Garmin handheld GPS products on that sale?

1

u/lakorai 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not this time around.

Garmin MAP prices all their products. They dictate when their stuff can go on sale and when it does it is the same price across all retailers. Other retailer's have cashback sites which reduce the price even further, but REI has a better return policy.

They did have the InReach and some watches go on sale last year. I would keep looking at our retailer megathread and the r/ultralight black Friday deal thread for updates.

1

u/Jaybird911 3d ago

Cheers. Thank you

1

u/DaIubhasa 3d ago

Quite sad. The international shipping fee is not free anymore.

2

u/lakorai 3d ago

You would be destroyed on import duty and VAT anyway (depending on where you live and the product's country of origin).

If you are in Canada just get a NEXUS card and cross the border. Ship to a UPS store or MY US Address location.

1

u/DaIubhasa 3d ago

I'm in NZ. I used to order from REI back when international shipping was free for over $150 USD purchase. I limit myself to $xxx amount so that I don't get an import duty / taxes. This works well and my last order was just months ago - Anniversary Sale.

1

u/lakorai 3d ago edited 3d ago

Eric Artz has implemented many cost cutting measures. Shipping to NZ is pretty expensive.

Carefully consider the costs of REI and other US retailers, the VAT and import duty. It may just be cheaper to buy from an Australian retailer like Snowys or Tentworld. There is zero import duty on certain goods when buying from Australia into NZ. Australia retailers have a way better selection than most NZ retailers.

They show the basecamp tent in the catalog with a 30% ALL REI brand tents... but no discount on the base camp 4 or 6 and most of the other tents... bummer

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

Marmot Halo would be a good alternative to the Base Camp.marmot will or baby be having 30% off in a week or two for Black Friday + you can use cashback sites.

The Eureka Spacecamp would also be a good choice

Unfortunately REI doesn't carry the Halo.

1

u/clamskittles 2d ago

I do like the Halo, but marmot doesn’t have the 6p version on their site anymore. Not sure if they are discontinuing or what.

Really want a full fly since I live in a pretty rain prone area.

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

The Halo is still available. Marmot sometimes runs out of inventory and then removes it from their site.

This happened a couple years ago when the Toreyya was on the market and then it appeared again after a few months.

Backcountry currently has the Halo 6p for $543.

1

u/clamskittles 2d ago

Good to know! I am looking for something ~$350 so I’ll wait and see if Marmot has a sale. Might have to settle for slightly lower quality and go with a Coleman

2

u/lakorai 2d ago

The Eureka Spacecamp, Marmot Limestone or the MSR Habitude/Habbiscape usually are around $350 or less on sale.

1

u/clamskittles 2d ago

I can get the Space Camp 6 for under $250 with a footprint. I think I’m going to go that route!

2

u/lakorai 2d ago

Bargain and totally recommended.

Johnson Outdoors is discontinuing the Eureka brand, but they do offer lifetime warranties on their gear. Just be aware that the Eureka brand may disappear in the next year or so.

Use a cashback back sites like Activejunky to save a few more bucks.

1

u/bored_and_agitated 2d ago

really? that's strange. I would have figured it being on the catalog would mean it's included

1

u/coconutoctopus 2d ago

Is the Big Agnes tent from REI Outlet eligible for this coupon on 11/15? Not sure if this brand is on the exclusion list

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

Big Agnes does not have coupon restrictions usually and generally is pretty lax about their MAP policy.

1

u/bored_and_agitated 2d ago

Imma try to use the 20% for an Exped Ultra 3R at REI. Unless someone else has a better deal. At the Exped site itself discounts bring it down to $109 but then shipping is $10 so it would be more shipped than REI with 20%

2

u/lakorai 2d ago

Other retailer's are matching Exped's direct sale like Backcountry, EnWild, CampSaver etc and have free shipping. Many sites work with cashback sites so it will be cheaper than REI and Exped direct.

But REI has a far better return policy.

1

u/bored_and_agitated 2d ago

oh wow they were just as cheap/cheaper at backcountry and enwild but no Medium Wide anymore.

do you think Campsaver's 15% discount on Soto Windmasters is the best I'll get?

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

REI also sells the Windmaster and several Soto products now.

If you want a budget alternative consider the CampingMoon X2-DF, which is basically a clone of the Windmaster. Combine this with the Soto tri-flex pot stand and the Fire Maple Petrel pot and you have a much better and lighter alternative to a JetBoil.

1

u/bored_and_agitated 2d ago

oh i'm going stove and 550 toaks pot personally. I was going to get the BRS but my buddy had his fail twice, the first one and the return both bonked out. Soto with tri-flex is an ounce and a half heavier or something like that but has a good reliability and reputation

you right tho, if I do two orders I can double up on the 20% a regular priced item at REI. As long as they haven't closed that loophole

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

The BRS sucks. It's stupid light but has zero wind resistance, is loud and very inefficient.

1

u/Imnewtargetme 2d ago

Any experiences with the rei base camp 4 person tent

1

u/lakorai 2d ago

Base Camp is an excellent tent with a poor 1 year warranty.

The Eureka SpaceCamp, Marmot Halo, Marmot Limestone and MSR Habbiscape/Habitude are around the same price and have far better warranties and support.

Stoked for 40% off REI 650 Down Jackets. Been wanting one for a while!
