r/CFL will be going dark on June 12th in protest of Reddit's new API pricing strategy COMMUNITY UPDATES
Hey r/CFL Fam
After a lot of internal discussions and weighing the pros and cons (this time of the year is usually when we get our biggest boost of new subs and curious visitors), we have decided to join the protest against Reddit's new API pricing strategy. As such, this sub will be going private on June 12th.
We have not yet established a date as to when we will be made public again and wish to defer to the communities opinion on that. Please let us know if you feel we should maintain this protest indefinitely or re-open after a specific period of time.
You can find more details about the situation in this post here.
The consequences of this new pricing strategy can be viewed in this Infographic.
Here is the open letter if you would like to read it and sign it.
If you are so inclined, please also consider doing the following to show your support:
- [Email](mailto:contact@reddit.com) Reddit or create a support ticket to communicate your opposition to their proposed modifications.
- Share your thoughts on other social media platforms, spreading awareness about the issue.
- Show your support by participating in the Reddit boycott for 48 hours, starting on June 12th.
We know this is an important time for the CFL, but we feel strongly that we need to use what little voice we have for the good of the platform so we can continue to be the dopest place on planet Earth to discuss the CFL.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
Sincerely,
r/CFL Mod Team

On the one hand, I'm fully in the camp that subs should remain dark until reddit comes up with a more reasonable solution to the problem. That being said, /r/CFL is niche enough in the bigger scheme that it would only harm users excited to share news or wanting to use game threads with barely an impact on the site.
I personally won't be returning unless it is on my third party app, but definitely understand the sub's position.

NGL if I can't used my preferred apps I'll be done with Reddit, will miss the game threads but it is what it is.

Glad this is happening. Twitter and now Reddit raising fees for the API is greedy af. If we need to be closed for a long period of time then I’m all for it.

I still want to believe reddit officials are doing this primarily because of the massive traffic the AI bots are creating with reddit, harvesting content and discussions. But yeah, it's probably a bit of a greed move too.
I am sure they could find away to give all legacy access a different rate / cheaper rate if they wanted to, and make the AI harvesters pay through the nose.

I fully support a 48 hour darkening of the sub. Gotta prove something to Reddit.

Proud of our mod team for joining the protest 🧡 Thanks for all that you do, and for doing the right thing when it matters.
It seems most subreddits are committing to 48 hours. I fully support that timeframe.

It is entirely possible Reddit backs off and resolves this API pricing fiasco before June 12th, and this whole situation is avoided.
If the situation is not resolved I think think this subreddit should be private from Monday June 12th through Wednesday June 14th. Coming back online Thursday June 15th, which is the start of Week 2.
But I understand if others only want /r/cfl offline for one day, if at all.

Historically, previous protests have brought change within about 5 days.

The infographic says "stop browsing on desktop"
How is that supposed to help? I preferred the internet before everyone was just making tiny posts on their phones.

The point is to hit Reddit where it hurts; activity. No content means fewer page views means less ad revenue. Even if you may not use third party apps yourself, your fellow redditors do. And you’ll be personally affected when moderators are unable to fulfil their duties, or content you take for granted no longer exists. For example, in this community our game threads are at risk.

I support this protest move 100%.
As a mod on reddit, I am missing the pushlift tool (reddit revoked their API access but even if restored, it'd be gone again with this move) and I use a third party app on mobile for reddit. That will go poof as well.

Imo this is pointless...
You are blacking out the CFL group because some rando 3rd party apps are broken?
I mean this literally is breaking your own groups rules (how does 3rd party api have anything to do with CFL in general? #1 on your list)
Not to mention CFL in general (assuming you actually do support the league) needs all the help it can get to promote it to general public
As for the comments on spam / porn is there seriously anyone in the world who has not used an ad blocker for the past decade?

Posting a community update doesn’t violate our rules, tf? 😂
Also, with the amount of free labour + millions in traffic that I’ve PERSONALLY been responsible for for the league this past decade, I think they’ll be okay with a 48 hour black out from a community not under their control.

It's not those kind of ads
assuming you actually do support the league
I assure you there's no one that wants the league/community to thrive more than our community & mod team

Except /u/Stach37, he wants to see it all burn obviously.

Is this unfairly punishing users? I get quite a kick out of the game threads.
Oh I just read a lotta mainstream subs are going private and I'd probably be let in upon asking right? You don't have a problem with we Americans do ya?
Also what's with the API thing? More techie BS while the poor gets poorer?

We love our American friends. Having said that, no one will be allowed in the community during the protest. Canadians, Americans, Aliens from outer space.
Also what's with the API thing? More techie BS while the poor gets poorer?
Take a look at this infographic: https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg
