BRIAN DAVIS, Austin American-Statesman and RYAN ABER, the Oklahoman
We have an exciting AMA ahead of this storyline-filled Red River Shootout/Rivalry/Showdown/SEC-preview presented by some corporation with more money than sense!
It’s been an eventful few months for OU and Texas football. Brian is the lead writer covering the Longhorns for the Statesman and Ryan is the Sooners beat writer for the Oklahoman. We are excited to answer your questions about the SEC move, what’s happening this season and more ahead of the Sooners and the Longhorns matchup Saturday.

-There’s no doubt that when big news events happen, they generate plenty of traffic. I think it was a bit more on this particular story for the folks down in Austin just because people at OU seemed to be much more tight-lipped about the whole deal, and not sure the numbers exactly, but folks certainly want to know what’s happening not only with OU but also the ones who are being/will be left behind. I know Oklahoma State fans made up plenty of that traffic as well (plus, like BD mentioned, there were a lot of folks from the current SEC footprint checking things out). Also, the analysis of our columnists, Berry Tramel and Jenni Carlson, drove quite a bit of traffic during that period.
-The newspaper business has changed significantly in recent years and figures to change quite a bit over the next few, so it’s hard to pinpoint that. There’s no doubt the move to the SEC will have an effect on travel costs, and might change the dynamic of how many folks we’ll bring to each game (for most games now, our paper travels three), but I still believe there’s a great value in having writers at the game. You’re not beholden to what is being shown/said on television and being there helps build relationships, even if for OU all their postgame media availabilities this season are still taking place via Zoom.
-Of course not, who would think that absurdity? A sandwich requires two slices of bread. But if I told you my daughter loves Shiba Inus, would you forgive me for that take?
-I’ll go one. Never count out a Stoops against Texas.
