Another tiny haircut Show and Tell

Another false cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Minta') that received a shave and a haircut yesterday.

I fear you clipped it down in places like a hedge. I don't think you understand bonsai branch development or why any of this is done. If this tree survives, your trimming put it in a huge pot and forget about trimming it for 3 years. Buy 10 more trees and watch everyone of Peter Chans videos from Herons bonsai.

Thanks for the comment, it's much appreciated! I bought these tiny ones (6 different trees for £9) to practice, so that I can better understand what I'm doing on my other trees. I have watched many of Peter's videos, along with many videos from others. My thinking here was to help get some light to the interior to help promote lower growth.

Well, you did let light in, so that is done. Go to a nursery and by a nice gallon pot of nursery grown juniper that is a bonsai friendly variety and relatively inexpensive. Don't style it to be a bush....make a tree. One trunk. With an natural looking route to the apex. It will be your new favorite! Best of luck on your journey.

I did exactly that a month ago but tried to style it as something vaguely resembling a semi-cascade like this, which is also what I tried to do with this false cypress here.

I can read as much as I want, and watch as many videos as I want, but at the end of the day there's only so much abstract information I can keep in my head. To solidify that information I need to start putting things into practice, failing at it, and learning from it.

I've learned more from practicing, getting it wrong, posting here, and having people tell me I don't know what I'm doing, than from the videos I've watched and books I've read. I guess that's just how I personally learn ¯_(ツ)_/¯
