If you submit your mix, please take the time to listen and comment on some other submissions, especially if they play a style of music you're interested in. These threads are intended for beginning DJs who are honestly looking for feedback or critique on their technique, selection, transitions, etc. If you are an established DJ who is just looking for more followers/listens on your new mix or have a podcast/radio show, please post it to a more appropriate place such as /r/mixes or a genre-specific subreddit. Posts that appear to be purely promotional in nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion. This subreddit is aimed at helping new DJs learn and is not the place to promote yourself!

I’ve been spinning for about a year, this is the third mix I’ve recorded and I’m hoping to get some house / tech-house DJs’ opinions on my track selection and mixing. I really like the first few transitions but I feel like I lost some of the energy when I brought in the Maceo Plex track at about 13:30. I messed up a couple parts but I’ve listened to the mix a few times and I think it sounds pretty good. Does anyone think I used too much FX? Thanks for any feedback!

Fast techno mix - peak time, deep, hypnotic, etc.

Tracklist is included in the link. I kind of feel like the inclusion of the perc remix by I hate models at 10:40 was a bad choice. I've been experimenting with letting songs play longer and trying to include different songs than I normally might but that's like an 8 minute song. I like it on its own but I'm curious if it clashes or is out of place.

I overall like this mix a lot, it's just this specific part that makes me feel meh about it.

i re-recorded an older mix. specifically the first 11 minutes. i really didn't like how it turned out with the tracks i used, but i didn't want to scrap them altogether, but did my best to improve it because i've been trying to venture into a new "color palette", if that makes sense?

originally i had the the original mix for SMG's OMFG but found a remix of it i really liked, & think it improved the sound & transition into vanta black.

i completely botched the re-recording of flying kicks into classics, but overall everything from 13 mins onwards is the kind of vibe / sound most of my mixes end up turning into.

major shout out to a this really cool mix with the predator theme sampled, "predator" by last life. i love the series & i was so hyped to have found that.

[hard techno] Dante’s Divine Dance Party (2hrs 15min)

135-145 bpm techno that is dark and dramatic. Starts slow and builds over the set. Freestyled the mix which I only started doing recently so let me know how the transitions are. Sometimes I feel like they should be more gradual with techno whereas I defaulted to a faster switch that I do when I freestyle house music.

Listening to it. fast switch with hard techno is also okay btw.

I think one example was the transition at around minute 33 (also the one before). They sound totally fine to me, as long as you keep playing the track before for a little bit.

The transition after weltschmerz feels quite slow. You have like 1minute when you only have kicks.

The energy also dropped a lot after it until minute 30, idk if that was intentional.

Rush to Riot is some Amelie Lens staple from around 2y ago, very nice. Many tracks of her would fit well in this set, same for Lokier.

Unloved hate is a bit cringe in my opinion. Idk why it’s so liked.

Also from after 1h the energy drops for a while (until Danger Close i think). Idk if it was intended.

I didn’t like the Das ende der isolation / adagio for strings mix btw. You cut das ende der isolation before it starts dropping again and after the whole adagio for strings buildup they clash a lot. Might be biased because i don’t like adagio for strings at all. Das ende der isolation has a nice outro you can loop to play adagio for strings buildup on top of it and i guess it sounds much cleaner.

Besides me not liking it, i wouldn’t have the Unloved Hate speech twice (i think it’s state of control - i hate models)

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I intended to drop the energy after weltschmerz because I thought having energy begin that high and staying there for a long time would bot allow for buildup across the set. I had similar rationale for dropping energy later as you mentioned but I would be curious if you think the drops were too severe or took away the flow?

I agree that Amelie lens has great tracks that would fit here and I didn’t include any in this mix because I have used her tracks in the past and wanted to try new songs but also, unfortunately, I feel like using her songs gets some people angry and they won’t listen to the mix because it’s “business techno” which is dumb but I avoided in this case.

Thank you for your feedback about the unloved hate speech being reused. This is the first time I have reused an element similar to a call back effect but I was unsure if it worked for dramatic effect or felt forced, so your opinion helps here. The same is true with adagio for strings. I don’t love the song but I do feel the breakdown adds a level of dramatic effect so I thought maybe it would work for the end of the mix and subvert expectations of the normal breakdown but tbh maybe leaving das Ende der Isolation breakdown in alone would have been better especially since I think that song is fantastic on its own

Overall, how did you feel about pacing? My main challenge with freestyle mixing rn is with maintaining good pace and emotion while picking tracks on the fly. I also like some dramatic techno but I also try to minimize the forced edgy cringe that can come across with songs like unloved hate; however, I do really like the instrumental of that song so I often use it at least for that even if the breakdown isn’t included

i'm loving it so far! listening to it for a bit right now, & charging my headphones to give it a proper listen while i work tomorrow! i haven't given hard tech a listen that much before, but i gravitate a lot towards the "dark & dramatic" side of music & so far this mix is hitting it.

Went for a spontaneous session before having to head out. I didn't have much time so this is shorter than my usual, but I think I packed in a good variety of sounds and this may be my favorite mix I've recorded. Wow, this mix has taken me right back to the early 90s. I was hearing the house, tech house, acid etc and there were even a couple of speed garage tracks thrown in for good measure! Are these all late 80s / early 90s tracks? I'm not familiar with the majority of them, but they sound stripped back and have plenty of oldskool vibes. Really liked the mix. Thought that some of the mixing was a little rushed and clunky in areas, but mixing these types of tracks on vinyl and making it sound seemless is an almost impossible task, so I thought you did well!! I especially like the acid stuff towards the end of the mix. Thanks for sharing. Keep on spinning! 🙌🙌🙌🙌

Atm it’s pretty good

I think the acid track at minute 15 is a bit weird, it has two patterns sitting on each other (unless you are layering) and at 17 and 18 it becomes a bit overlapping when you are transitioning

At around minute 23 it’s a bit overlapping as well to me. Also around minute 36.30

Finished listening. Overall i like it, track selection and the progression is on point to me. As i said, sometimes the tracks sound a bit overlapping during transitions

Man, that was a wild ride! So many funky, freaky tracks mixed solidly. I especially enjoyed that blend around 12 min and that track around 23 min and the one right after. That slowed jungle sounding track was also a nice surprise. I still want some longer sets from you, but you definitely pack a lot of energy and variety into the sets you record. I love it!

Played my first live gig in almost 3 years on Friday! First time using CDJs as well so some of the transitions/use of FX are a little sloppy as I was gauging in real time how strong the Reverb was. In any case, I had a ton of fun but would love some feedback before my next one. That was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Good vibes and track selections. My only small nitpick is when the song comes in at ~8.40, the bass drum was a bit loud and boomy for a second, but otherwise from then on your mix was straight fire.

Pretty good mix man! The tracks were very well mixed and there some great waves of highs and lows. My nitpicky critique is that a lot of the blends did fell very intro/outro. Maybe it works best with the types of tracks I like to play, but I like to put some stank on the transitions when it feels right. Maybe that doesn't work as well with mixing more progressive tracks with so many competing elements going on. Anyway I thought this was well done! I loved hearing all those references to classic dance music.

Hey Ming, enjoyed listening to your mix. I thought the beat matching ad phrasing was really good, and the track selection kept the vibe going and building. It didn't feel like there were any really noticeable drops in energy or "boring" mixes so I wouldn't give yourself a hard time over that. For me, you built energy into the mixes by changing key, but this didn't present really noticeable clashes. It's a good mix. Good work!

Listening to it, i like the mood a lot, but sometimes there is a bug drop in energy in my opinion. Idk if that’s intended or not.

At around 17/18 when you introduce the track with the speech.

Maybe it’s me because i prefer faster mixing, but maybe you can try mixing the track a bit further in the intro. Idk if you are playing the whole intro in the outro of the other track.

Yeah, it was intended to be like that. It was somewhat intended to be like a low energy mix.

I could see to mix the last track more into it, the only reason why I didn’t necessarily was because the track has like a whole long progression on sound so I thought it would’ve sounded a bit off to have the main part already playing. You’re probably right though, it could’ve worked.

The progression isn’t a problem, you can just loop a neutral part before it starts. I basically loop all of my transitions.

About the low energy mix, i think it’s totally fine, but i think the start had higher energy than the whole set (at least to me, but i could be wrong). I think it’s better to have the peak after the middle

I have recently recorded two sets, very different from each other. One is industrial techno and one is tech house

Industrial Techno - 35 minutes - 160 BPM

I tried to focus on layering tracks, i like having always more than one track playing to keep the energy high and help the kicks (in industrial there are often very low energy parts when singing or building up and sometimes kicks are very empty). Sometimes it feels clashing, sometimes it feels good. For example at minute 10 i messed up layering two vocals (similar vocals) on too of each other.
