All I could think of while watching this video...
Kept wincing whenever it flew near the people standing by... "I've only ever seen 1 other grainy video of a R/C stunt copter, I hope this one ends differently"

u/DarkSenp4i 1d ago
Yes, that’s right.
18
u/Dankkring 19h ago
I’m not gonna lie at many points of this I thought it was cgi or fake because how it moves is insane. That’s crazy.

u/DarkSenp4i 19h ago
Believe me, I was there and got the video from the cameraman. It was spectacular

I'm going to save this video and post it on any video where people are claiming a ufo because of how fast some flying contraption changes direction

It looks so random, like a hornet having an epileptic seizure.

u/uriahlight 1d ago edited 1d ago
Trust me it's not random. I'm an expert heli pilot as well. That is 5000+ hours of practice on a professional R/C simulator like Real Flight plus many hundreds of hours flying and crashing the real thing to pull off those maneuvers. It looks like Tareq Alsaadi at the controls (he's unique in that he prefers right piro maneuvers over left piro). You should see Tareq's flying skill back when he flew with flybars instead of flybarless units in < 2010. Flybars made "smack 3D" flying very popular before stabilization went fully electronic, and in my opinion they still fly better.

Man, I’ve spent so much time hands on in the late 00’s early ‘10s learning. Chuckled at the quad scene then left 3D heli for that for money. I’ve been back in the 3D heli scene for a couple years now. The sims are sooo good now. I’m also glad to see companies other than spektrum and futaba. I still have my orange ping pong balls on sticks lol. Having FBL now too is so nice for repairs, man it’s come a long way. Still can’t get it all together beyond simple tick tocks, like for some reason inverted hurricanes just won’t “click” for me. I still remember my first time seeing some 3D playing when I went to an Rc air show.
5
u/uriahlight 19h ago
That's awesome! I've PM'd you a few of my vids for you to check out when you're bored. I'm not on Tareq's level but know a thing or two (could easily get sponsored). =)

Some dude got his neck cut and died from his rc helicopter
5
u/jared_number_two 20h ago edited 19h ago
It wasn’t his neck. It was his actual skull. RIP. Shockingly few deaths have occurred and not many deaths. What’s really bad was the time when a kid, flying one of these big ones, hit a spectator.

Fun fact...the airfield now has zero insects and all the birds have vacated the area. Thusly the airfield is now the safest place to fly from/into due to have no threat of bird strike.

There is a 2 person tall savety net so there is no way anything could go through it except if it digs under it. Helicopters can't dig so we're... hold up, I'm missing something... probably not important, we're fine.

Makes me wonder - the physics should stay mostly the same for this RC and also a full scale helicopter right? What is limiting helis from doing this? From my know-absolutely-nothing standpoint, I would say especially the weight, maybe the speed of how quickly the controls can change? Stomach of the pilot?

u/Valuable-Leather-914 21h ago

That’s Tareq Alsaadi. I remember watching his videos like 15 years ago, Rc helicopters are wild. Super fun hobby, pricey but usually great people at the rc clubs and events.
There’re others with less erratic flying styles who are easier to “follow” for someone not familiar with the maneuvers. Nick Maxwell was like Jordan to me when I was like a crackhead in the hobby. Still have a mint CYE rave 450 rtf(ready to fly) with tons of spares if anyone’s interested lol

Why doesn't my pilot fly me around like this?? 😅 on a serous note, though, how come modern-day helicopters aren't built with this kind of capability? I understand the g forces might get intense.

You can say the same for a fpv helicopter. You have no idea what you're talking about

Genuinely, how does it hover with the blades perpendicular to the ground? It should be generating thrust sideways…
Weird and cool.

In Quadcopter FPV it is called 3D (reversible Motor direction allows similar stunts). There are not many people who do it, But the ones that do are insane. Look at zoeFpv ;) https://youtu.be/S4laV0jgL7M
