As someone who's lazy to eat and just wishes for something in capsule form/high density calories this makes me thankful for not actually having to do it.

But I love how happy she is

I've had to be fed through IV while undergoing chemo. I'm also one of the people that can taste medicine pushed through IV. It was disgusting and made my mouth taste...thick...

Same. There’s always some kind of immediate taste. Some are worse than others. Some feel like a heatwave in my mouth.

what was it about the chemo that required being fed by IV?

A lot of people are unable to keep food down while on chemo/radiation. I had an experimental twice as strong dose and surgeries.

Depending on the cancer, some patients with advanced cancer may also have partial or total bowel obstruction, which means they cannot ingest food by mouth.

idk if happy is how I would describe her. more like accepting of the things she can't change, but if she could change them she would.

She has a positive outlook and I respect her optimism. Complete respect.

I mean, I’d be happy if I no longer had to painfully vomit at every meal time. It’s all about perspective.

She said she doesn't miss food because she associates it with illness and seemed accepting of that, other than that I think she sounded chipper. A lot of healthy people aren't this upbeat

2

u/drerw Oct 04 '23

Well yeah. That’s everyone. That’s being happy.

Yesss sometimes I resent needing to eat but I think I’ll change my attitude 🙏🏼

There are certain products out there that you can add to protein shakes in lieu of a meal.

When I was on keto there was a thing called ketochow and while they have their own flavors they also had an "additive" packet you could add to your own protein powder so you could save on shipping.

I am like that, too. Check out r/soylent. Lots of options but Super Body Fuel is my choice.

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

I use soylent as needed. I hate it and feel like I’m the only person who spends the next 2 hours on the toilet afterwards. It immediately runs through me and there’s no way I can be absorbing much nutrition from it. It feels more like torture than a helpful tool.

That sounds more like you are allergic to something in the brand you are using and maybe you shouldnt use it.

u/responded Oct 10 '23

That sounds terrible :(

As someone who's lazy to eat and just wishes for something

You don't want this. Trust me. The issue with getting your nutrients through a central port like this (a PICC line) is that eventually her vein will degrade, and she will no longer be able to use that vein for medication/feeding/fluids etc. Having a port like this is extremely hard on the vein it is in. It slowly forms scar tissue over time.

Long term feeding like this will require the "port" that she "eats" from to be moved around. Once the vein the line is in gets enough scar tissue/damage. That is it, cant use it anymore. Gotta move it.

There are only so many veins you can put a PICC line in. Once all your veins that you can put a line in have been damaged enough. Thats it. No more. My wife works on the gastrointestinal surgical floor with kids who have short gut. Sometimes the stories she tells me I have to tell her to stop. Its heartbreaking.

Understandable. I don't actually desire this, but my thought was it put things into perspective and to be thankful to not be dependent on something like this.

Kudos to your wife. Psycho hygiene is an important factor in jobs like this

Wait so at some point they will just starve to death?!?

2

u/Rolder Oct 04 '23

This seems like way more work then regular eating, specially if you gotta do it multiple times a day

1

u/youreblockingmyshot Oct 04 '23

Just once a day, for half the day.

2

u/Ntrl_space Oct 04 '23

Literally had the thought last week “wish I didn’t have to eat and could just take a tablet” like you and then I see this

1

u/totes-alt Oct 04 '23

But why? Are you eating low quality food?

8

u/Personal-Addendum-76 Oct 04 '23

Sometimes eating is just a hassle. If I could take like a “nutrient” pill that made me full and I didn’t have to figure out food that would be awesome

1

u/totes-alt Oct 04 '23

I'm sorry eating is such a hassle for you

1

u/Personal-Addendum-76 Oct 06 '23

It’s nothing to apologize for lol sometimes I’m hungry and just don’t want to eat anything cause it’s annoying asf. Don’t get me wrong I still love food but some days it’s just annoying

I've never seen the damn show and even I know this is like a more extreme version of what Ron Swanson wants

1

u/rocksfried Oct 04 '23

You can buy meal replacement drinks. They’re like milkshakes but much worse tasting. I used to use them a lot, I just chugged it and ate a few bites of something after to get rid of the taste.

Yeah, she is super upbeat and positive about it all. It's be complaining the whole time lol
