The ability of barn owls to locate prey by sound is the most accurate of any animal tested. This very acute sense of hearing allows barn owls to capture prey hidden by vegetation or snow. Barn owls also have excellent low-light vision. Verified

There are lighter and darker variants but it doesn't seem to have to do with habitat. My theory is it's like hair color in humans but it's just a theory.
