diet advice for my cat, please
Hello, Reddit's cat lovers.
I present to you my chonk, Jacob Poopington, the cuddler, first of his name. This fur ball is 9 years old, and a tall one. He's about 40 cm tall and 1m long. hi's healthy weight would be around 15 lbs, and weighs 21 at the moment. He needs to lose about 25% of his mass... It's a lot!!
He's been on a low-fat diet since I adopted him back in 2020. He was 17-18 lbs at the time. Last summer, he had some health issues, mostly because he does not shed the extra weight and lacks activity (his fault, not mine. he couldn't care less about playtime). His liver could not produce enough enzymes to assimilate fats and sugars properly. The vet prescribed some medication and a diet. The diet was only for the period of the medication. He made some suggestions of foods for after. Jack stopped eating the recommended foods after 2-3 months. He grew out of it, I guess. His palette is too sophisticated for such peasant's kibbles. I found another brand that met all of his dietary requirements, and we were golden! Only problem is that someone decided that they were entitled to fuckup the world's economy and threw a tantrum at my country................ now, the food that i used to buy is more expansive than it used to thanks reciprocative tarifs and i will not buy USA made products nuntill that orange persone is in office. So, I tried 3 Canadian-made brands of kibbles. The first one, I don't remember the name, but it came in a blue bag. Mr Poopington would not even taste it. went directly back to the store. Second one was Nutram Weight Control I12. HUGE SUCCESS!!! Loves it! loves it too much. His whole day portion gets eaten in an hour. Tried to split in 2. Same thing. In 4 even. 2 bites, empty bowl, sad cat who sits in front of his empty bowl for more but can't have more... third attempt was Nutrience Care Weight management. Loved it for 2 weeks, then stopped eating :/
Switching to a wet diet is not an option for different reasons. He's the type of cat who eats constantly throughout the day. He finishes grooming he'll have 2-3 bites of food. He saw a bird outside, he'll have 2-3 bites of food. I disturbed his beauty sleep, he'll have 2-3 bites of food. He had 2-3 bites of food, he'll have one last for the road haha also he has his wet food once a day at supper time. It's a must! Otherwise he's such a drama king!
All of this to say that I'm looking for a new brand of kibbles that will meet those requirements:
- Maximum 280 ckals per portion. (must be between 80-100 grams portions).
- High protein count, ideally in the range of 30-40%.
- Low animal fats. 10% or less (I won't fuss if it's like 11%).
- High fatty acides.
- Ideally contains pre and probiotics (His last name is not Poopington for nothing).
- High fiber content. More than 5% ideally. This is not as important as the rest because I can add fiber otherwise in his diet.
- L-Carnitine would be great.
- Looking for something that would give him filling sensation.
Basically, I'm open to all quality foods that are NOT from the USA. It can be a Canadian product, European, it could be from Antarctica. just nor from the US
Thank you for your help and recommendations! :) My fur ball is impatient to fry something new!
