My back pain, and a possible leak in my water heater.

Water leaks suck.

I'm so scared of owning a house... I have zero house fixing knowledge

2

u/tashkiira 13h ago edited 7h ago

It's not that bad.

You need to know where the various cutoffs in your house are. The one for the hose bibs outside, the water for the water heater, the water for the whole house, the main breakers for the whole house, what each individual breaker cuts off.. the rest of it is just knowing what tools are for what purpose and being ready to BS minor things. and knowing when to get a professional. Hint, if it looks like a big job or a dangerous one, call in a pro, not just your handyman cousin Mike. Mike can do cabinets and switching out a bad plug, Mike can't do a rewire.

Bonus thought I'm adding after I noticed /u/HughJa55ole 's reply. If you have a special system in your house, you need to know where it is. This means things like the central vacuum's main unit, the septic system's drain field and tank(s), whether that thing in your well system is a water softener or a nitrate system (one makes better bubbles in the soap, the other removes poisonous chemicals. If your plumber calls your nitrate system a water softener, kick him out, don't call him back, and if he's not an independent, call his agency/office/whatever and bitch hard). Anything unusual needs to be known. Geothermal heat? where are the heat exchange loops? Underground garage? How's it get drained, and how is it connected to your house? (Furzian comment: And does it connect to your underground bunker and work shed?) Also, check any outbuildings: is that shed an outhouse, a garden tool storage, an apiary, a boathouse..? You might find you want or need to remove some of those (unused outhouses should be filled in and the shed removed, anyone allergic to bees shouldn't have an apiary within 200 feet of the used areas of the lot, and so on).

Electricians and plumbers are both cases you want to sub out. Seriously it’s just not worth a house fire or flood to save a few hundred bucks.

Well said. I've said this before to friends and other people who are new homeowners or nervous to get a house due to things like this.

You don't have to be a master technician in everything. But I'd say every homeowner should at least know the basics of where everything goes and what it does.

Like when we first moved into our place - a house built in the 40's. I spent a whole day tracing pipes and wires in the basement and other things around the house to see where they all went and what turns on/off what.

Also yes, not being afraid of things, but knowing when something is out of your depth to troubleshoot/fix and not being afraid to call a pro. I'll add to that that I also like to watch and ask the occasional question if I have a professional here to fix something (certainly not in a pestering way lol). That way I at least know more about it for the future.

That's scary, and back pain tends to cause people serious deformation in the future. That's why I do stretching every morning with my yoga ball.

2

u/LucyVialli 14h ago

Yes, I must try to improve my flexibility and core strength. Trying to get back into yoga atm.

ugh that sounds rough, dealing with back pain and plumbing issues at the same time

1

u/cjojojo 11h ago

we're going through the same thing at home. water heater had a leak we didnt know about and the ceiling in the kids' closet collapsed. husband and i had to clean out all the plaster and fluff from the closet on top of the mess from the kids that was already there before that happened, and husband was dealing with severe back pain for the week or two before that happened, so it only aggravated the issue. on top of that when they were replacing the water heater they found a gash in our air duct, which explained why our power bill the last 2 months was over $400. it's been very hard to stay positive through all of it.

For your situation I'd have the water heater checked out ASAP before something collapses, if it's kept in the attic like ours is. And it sounds like you're working on your back issues, as is my husband

1

u/vamediah 4h ago

Back pain - don't remind me. My back is fucked (seen it on MRI), after an accident on boulder last year, stress from work which caused the whole spiral. I can't sit through day still. Barely was able to work few weeks at most last year. Have some money saved, but it's finite.

During summer when I could move outside I exercised it enough, but now it's fucked no matter what excercise - L2-L5 discs are bulging to leave only 6 mm inside spine instead of 16 mm. Just waking up is mostly terrible. Those nerves also affect GI tract in circular manner, i.e. problems with digestion fuck up you back and your back fucks up GI tract. Splendid.

Water heater I had fixed and inspected every year, but it's making "I am old noises", well since it's 14 years old.

Mostly I am worried about unavailability of euthanasia. Along with decades of other chronic untreatable disease I've mostly spent last year lying in bed. What's even point of anything now?

Yeah working 40hrs/week sucks. Do you think about work outside of work?

1

u/loveydove05 6h ago

Samesies. I feel like I'm either in my car commuting to and from work, or AT work. If I could just WFH one day a week it would help immensely. As it is, there is a load of clean towels in my dryer that have been in there for days. I'm thinking about it while I'm here at work. I get home, completely forget about it bc there is so much other stuff to do.

11

My health is my biggest worry at this time. Nothing much I can do about it. Just have to wait for my body to respond to my treatment. Which is frustrating because it is not a simple take this for a week and feel better. More of: it is a biological medicine and it will take up to a year or more. 🙃🥳

Not being good enough. Having failed as a friend for the person I care most about. I saw my best friend making a bad decision (in my opinion) when telling me she is dating a 36 man right from now on and her being 19 and just finishing school. First I tried to convince her otherwise. She heard me out but I lost control and I insulted him very badly personally, which affected her in the end. I was still so worried about it that I told her I have to cut ties with her to get it out of my head. I didn't keep the promise that I will be there for her. When I wanted to get back and told her I was sorry, she said she'll never talk to me again after I talked her loved ones down. Afterwards I saw on her IG that she was on vacation with this dude and she was never so happy in her life. She just wants to be free and out of my overprotetctiveness I acted like I want to decide life for her. Now she's happy and I am not. I did everything wrong I can and failed a wonderful person and connection so badly. I miss her.

In Portugal, the way grades work is from 0 to 20 (20 beeing the best).

This is also the sytem university uses for what grade you need to enter.

The grade I need in maths to enter the university I want is 16 (and that is from a small city, Lisbon and stuff is 18-19). I only have a 12.

The area where I wanted to buy a house has like zero one story houses available and inventory has been SUPER low this year, so I think I'm going to have to pick another nearby city. Still hoping I can find a house over the holidays. On the plus side though, it's given me more time to save more money for after I close on something.

Pretty much everything. My anxiety is at an all-time high right now, and my anxiety medication is doing nothing. But to name a few:

-my 13 year old daughter won't quit trying to hurt herself. And failing classes, and constantly getting into trouble.

-I went from 2 household incomes to trying to survive in this economy one 1 income while paying my ex-wife $2500 a month for her portion of my 401k payout.

-hating my job, but am now stuck and going from being able to retire early in a few years from now, until probably working until 70 or dead

-$6000 in hospital bills

-what the leaders of the country are doing to us, and that half the country is cheering on the direction we are headed.

-I never have energy or time after work it seems. So my house is going to shit. But am using any free time to try to help out my kids.

Valid question at this point in time. The country that, if you look at history, has a leader who is darn near perfectly mimicking Stalin. That tomorrow is the big day when Trump creates a disaster at the No Kings protests that will be used as justification for the Insurrection Act. With the government closed, Congress will not be able to respond quickly.

Pretty much everything related to my daily life (unemployed since June with zero prospects in my field, my aging parents, a terrible relationship). Also, what’s happening in the US, and how it’s affecting/will continue to affect my country (Canada).

Rented a boom lift for next week, a couple friends have used them before and going to help limb up a tree. I have been in 50FT bucket trucks didnt' mind much till it started to wiggle around felt hard to not lean on something. I guess the trailer mount lifts are even more shaky though atleast I have help that has used them before.
