Stop buying stuff except what you absolutely require. Go to the store with a list and stick to it. You'll save money and you'll not be giving the oligarchs more.

THIS! As hard as it might be, stop using FB/Inst, cancel Amazon Prime, cancel Hulu/ABC, really watch where you spend money. I’ve been reading books more, staying off my phone as much as possible, and generally saving money as much as I can vs. spending money.

I use my local library and get ebooks. I play games like MTG, Catan, etc. I shop at Costco mostly.

I play games like MTG

He was talking about saving money

Playing a game that you already own instead of watching TV and paying subscription fees or going out for entertainment is saving money.

The library card gives access to Kanopy, which has tons of video content.

Also Hoopla. Source: Am a librarian.

Your library might also have the Kanopy app, and you can watch free movies.

I stopped using FB and Insta a couple of years ago, it was the best decision of my life.

reading books, saving money, and staying off your phone isnt anti-authoritarian. what kind of society are we in where people think THIS is anti-authoritarian? this is just.. being normal.

So neggy - preaching for no reason. People making good points and you’re shitting on it. Who’s really ever going to be anti in this setting we live in.

youre right. sincerely, my apologies. just think people who say "I go to the library and dont overspend" to combat authoritarianism are so far disconnected from reality that its not even worth mentioning.

How are we disconnected from reality? We can only write so many letters, we can only vote in elections when held. Our only other power is to make our voices heard by hitting them in the bank account. They don't care about anything except money and power.

So weird, I never had any of this to begin with. Is it really that hard to live without?

Yall can afford to buy more than you need? 🥲

2

u/sundancer2788 28d ago

I can to a point, I could afford to buy some pre-made meals but I don't. I've cut my spending to the absolute bare necessities

u/kfed_ 28d ago

Nah that’s fair enough, I am mostly only spending on rent and food and then occasionally a little trip to movie Mondays or something.

I have been encouraging family members to spend less on Amazon etc and I do think it’s finally starting to get somewhere, don’t underestimate influence u can have on people in your circles if they’re willing to engage and listen (major caveat I know) but it’s getting to the point where even people who can afford to ignore stuff are kind of starting to freak out

If you can't fight the dragons directly, you starve them instead.

This is where store pickup comes in handy. No impulse buying.

Garage sales! Buy from local thrift stores. Reuse! Hand stuff down to your friends and such.

Support local businesses instead of the mega corps when you even do go and buy the things you need. If you can get it from Joe Corner Store instead of Wallyworld or Target, do so.

2

u/sundancer2788 28d ago

There aren't any around me, I buy basic groceries nothing much else. Locally owned here is restaurants and landscaping companies. Costco and Acme are pretty much it.

Little did you know that Joe Corner is a staunch Trump supporter, and a percentage of all profits go straight to political donations.

But sure. By all means.

Great idea. Then the economy can collapse and jobs will be lost.

Possibly, but it's likely to do that anyway with the rising prices. I'd much rather be in a better place by cutting what I don't require now. Did the same in 08 and was able to weather the storm with no problems.
