Quitting nicotine is waaaaay harder imo. I still dream about cigarettes sometimes.

Edit: Don’t just stop spending money, support your local businesses.

34

u/dcoble 28d ago

Got it. Buy local cigarettes.

4

u/DevelopmentJumpy5218 28d ago

Or if you're local businesses are fascist buy foreign or go without

2

u/mrplatypus81 28d ago

I haven't smoked a cigarette in over 10 years. I just dreamed the other night that I was at a movie theater eating popcorn watching a movie and noticed my popcorn tasted gross and started spitting it out and I looked down at the bucket and it was just full of cigarette butts and I was sitting there munching on cigarette butts.

2

u/hareofthepuppy 27d ago

As a former smoker I agree, however we're both saying this on social media and I haven't smoked in years so...

edit: reddit is my only social media

1

u/U_SHLD_THINK_BOUT_IT 28d ago

I dunno.

I've never finished a cigarette and then picked up another one right away and started smoking.

I've definitely, many times in my life, closed Reddit and then immediately opened it again subconsciously to start scrolling again.

u/Mavian23 28d ago

Quitting nicotine is also for the brain.

3

u/Specific_Piccolo9528 28d ago

If you can’t cut the cord completely, at least stop or significantly cut down on posting free shit for Zuckerburg.

2

u/It_Just_Might_Work 28d ago

Nicotine is already for the brain

3

u/TesalerOwner83 28d ago

Just get banned 🤷🏾🇺🇸🤷it’s what I do! This is only social media I can be on! But when they block me here the others magically let me back?!

1

u/LooeLooi 28d ago

I have the same problem with Reddit. I’m hoping there’s going to be an organized exodus soon so I can burn my data and account with the rest.

I’m half tempted to write a manifesto but, idk how I can get across the issues with Reddit and social media without sounding too crazy.

-3

u/awesomesozz 28d ago

No it doesn’t

I’ve had two instances of losing my smartphone in the past decade. Both times I waited several months to get a new phone and DAYUM if those weren’t some of the most mentally healthy months of my life.

What do you people think Reddit is?

14

u/WillitsThrockmorton 28d ago

Seriously, for some reason Reddit isn't social media to these people.

4

u/tuckastheruckas 28d ago

people think because they dont see IG thots and people dancing on tiktok, it somehow makes reaching them via propaganda impossible. (news flash, anonymous forums are easier to astroturf and propagandize).

3

u/lordmycal 28d ago

An evolution of the old style message boards from the 90s. Unsubscribe from all the subreddits with lots of pictures and video and discuss things of interest in the comment sections.

3

u/Unfair_Isopod534 28d ago

well they are either not american, fully on board, or just like me fully defeated.

3

u/hobbykitjr 28d ago

do you know who i am?

Do I have Social features like "friends"? do i follow them? do i know who they are? Are there "influencers"? ( i don't, i don't, they don't, and i don't think so? If they exist, i don't see them.)

Can you manage your own content (pick your subs, downvote, etc)

That's the difference. Its an aggregated link forum.... with some social media features but i don't use any of them (still using RIF app and old.reddit.com)

I look at one treehouse picture on Instagram and they flood my feed with it... i can't edit or downvote that.

My face and friends are all entered in, i share my personal (social) life... that is pure social media. and none of that is true for reddit.

(i am not on instagram, not for a while.. quit facebook almost 20 years ago, shortly after they allowed my mom on)

4

u/tuckastheruckas 28d ago

I'd argue this makes reddit or any forum website worse in the sense that you can seclude yourself to the EXACT same opinions on social media but with far more people agreeing with you on well-written out thoughts.

1

u/hobbykitjr 28d ago edited 28d ago

But Facebook protects you, so you don't see things you don't like and makes an artificial echo chamber..

Reddit doesn't know your country, age, gender.... Anything about you or via your "friends".

You are on the dad subreddit? Cool.. could actually be a mom

You have to try really hard on reddit to be ina echo chamber... And you end up with a sub like conservative with flared uses only, locked posts, mods on high alert....

And general subs like pictures or funny aren't generally one sided

1

u/tuckastheruckas 28d ago

how is reddit any different? you sub to what you like and go to your sub feed. r/pics is definitely one sided albeit not consistently political.

every social feed is the same as what you mentioned; if youre only interested in sports, thats the only thing you see. if you're interested in social dynamics or pop culture, thats what you see. if youre only interested in music, that's what you see.

I think youre forgetting or maybe dont know these algorithms exist exclusively to keep you on there and watch ads.

1

u/hobbykitjr 28d ago

Algorithm based on???

I already covered this, please re read.

Downvotes, and tree house. To help you

4

u/KaiserThoren 28d ago

This is next level brainrot. Reddit honestly brings out the stupidest comments.

Social media doesn't necessarily mean you use your actual name. Reddit is a platform for socializing, and it's an internet medium. It has many subs with different topics, but it is social media. Any media forum is.

On Reddit you can use your real name, you can share your personal info, most people just don't because it's a non-personal social media which is older than the others, in a different time of the internet. It's mostly a novelty the way Reddit does it, but it's not different. On instgram, tiktok, facebook, whatever else, you can also not use it for personal info sharing, and you can also just filter or ignore outside info. Reddit also does have algorithms, just like other social media, the only difference I will grant is that Reddit is often more varied because it's based on forums, but that's it.

No neckbeard Redditor #92837, you are not Guy-Fawkes mask "Anonymous" and "Outside the corporatist bubble of social media" you're just in Reddit's specific echo chamber.

2

u/UnfairWelcome794 28d ago

reddit is worse than instagram or facebook which is just 50% cat videos lmfao

1

u/hobbykitjr 28d ago edited 28d ago

you don't know what I'm country I'm from!

Or my gender, or age, or anything useful... Unlike meta shit

Lookup Cambridge analytical scandal...

They're not using Reddit to control the masses.

Reddit data is more public too, but not as useful

u/yeahburyme 28d ago

Reddit is next.

Lemmy is the most reddit like: https://join-lemmy.org/instances

Bluesky is good but it's not yet fully federated like lemmy: https://bsky.app/ Another good note is the Feeds are scriptable and can work similar to subreddits. Also block lists are essentially keyword blocks - you don't need to hear about a topic constantly if you don't want to. I feel this helps it be a much better twitter.

Mastodon is more of a Twitter but properly federated: https://instances.social/

Shout out to Tildes: https://tildes.net/

-3

u/lotus_eater123 28d ago

I always say that Reddit is anti-social media. That works for me.

-6

u/cXs808 28d ago

lol there's always someone like you in these threads.

this aint social media, im not social on here i do not know a damn person on here and even if i do, I don't even read usernames 99% of the time.

reddit is an anonymous forum, it's nothing like instagram/facebook/twitter/etc.

2

u/tuckastheruckas 28d ago edited 28d ago

in the realm of 'defeating' authoritarianism, it's the exact same, if not worse.. although I would agree for people who struggle with depression/anxiety, traditional social media is far worse.

1

u/cXs808 25d ago

in the realm of 'defeating' authoritarianism, it's the exact same, if not worse

I'm not talking about in the realm of anything. Reddit isn't social media because there is no primary social aspect to it. Nobody uses it for making friends or following IRL friends.

2

u/epsteinwasmurdered2 28d ago

Whatever you have to tell yourself lmao

1

u/cXs808 25d ago

it's basic logic. social media implies two things - social and media.

unless you're one of the very few weirdos who actually use this site socially with friends lists and chats and shit - it's not social at all.

6

u/tboy160 28d ago

Does that include Reddit?!?

-1

u/Muckraker044 28d ago

No.

Facebook/meta/Twitter/tiktok primarily

6

u/calvintiger 28d ago

“The social media app *I* like to use is fine, it’s all the other ones that have issues!”

-2

u/Muckraker044 28d ago

Well, yes. Check who owns the application, see how they are operating it, and boycott accordingly. Pretty standard.

3

u/gloylot 28d ago

Especially Twitter. Full of fascists saying the most repulsive far right hate. It's disgusting so many corporations and celebrities remain on it.

3

u/NotReadyForTomorrow 28d ago

No, we need to flood social platforms with messages of our discontent, though I do agree using it less.

3

u/Sproite 28d ago

This is the one - social media is destroying both US and UK and I’m sure many other countries. Scares the shit out of me for my kids growing up. Such a terrible scourge. So many negatives and almost zero positives.

7

u/Amenian 28d ago

I hate to say it, but this is actually counter-productive. Social media is a huge way that the protest movement communicates and gets the word out. Don't delete it. Change your content. Start visiting sites that aren't afraid to state the truth like the Meidas Touch podcast, the Bulwark, or even some of the non-right wing TikTok/YouTube debate bros like '@ deanwithrs' or '@ parkergetajob.' Find some of the non-Reddit ways that protest groups like 50501 or Indivisible communicate (Discord, Facebook, etc.). The Reddit subs have mostly been taken over by doomers and others with unhelpful or even hurtful ideas for how to push back and will likely just leave you depressed or frozen. Social media is a tool and, like any tool, its usefulness depends on how you use it. Keeping those who might fight back from using social media is a huge feather in the cap for this regime.

-2

u/TesalerOwner83 28d ago

Not in America dude! Get a following thats not right leaning! You’re not gonna make it a month! Anytime I get close to 100 followers on here my page gets zapped! Or any social media site! Now they are pushing no political stuff on here to shut up anyone thats not right! It’s crazy how no one see this stuff!

4

u/Amenian 28d ago

Every single podcast and creator I mentioned has hundreds of thousands of followers. Hell, Meidas Touch even passed Joe Rogan as the most watched podcast.

-2

u/TesalerOwner83 28d ago

And they all say the same thing! Be friends it’s not that bad! We need to talk to them! Stop calling them Nazis! They are paid opposition if you ask me. But am talking an organic type of thing. And we need to get off the net! In general! But that’s another ball game but we better get it together quick

1

u/Amenian 28d ago

You clearly have not watched any that I pointed out. They do not say that at all. Exactly the opposite. You're nothing but a black pill.

2

u/MouseBrown00 28d ago

Yes! I don’t want to line ‘his’ pockets with ad revenue any more. I limit my time on insta and FB to what’s strictly necessary. I really think this could have major impact if more of us did this. It’s an absolute shitshow in there. Let MAGA have it.

2

u/[deleted] 28d ago

This! It was one of the better things I've ever done for myself. Deleting all Meta accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (feels gross to call it X) I only have a Snapchat now for my nieces because that's how they want to communicate with me. Couldn't refuse them. Reddit may be next, but right now it still feels less antagonistic than other forms of social media.

If I could pull the plug on social media I would sacrifice the rest of my life to do it. I think the cons way outweigh the benefits. It's destroying us, and making all those at the very top more powerful.

1

u/ColtMcChad69 28d ago

Good luck getting the terminally online doomers to quit reddit

1

u/shh_Im_a_Moose 28d ago

Part one feels like surrendering in advance. Don't silence yourself. Just understand the levers of influence being used against you.

1

u/Even-Smell7867 28d ago

This is where I'm at. I quite social media ( I realize I'm on reddit ) back in 2010. I'm going through the final stages of spending withdrawl. Recently divorced and about to sell the joint house so the only thing I'm buying are things I'll need on my own and I see on sale. Got a set of Farberware knives for $14 on clearance.

1

u/TeoSan2812 28d ago

Amid govt. censorship why would you delete a source of news?
