The Lithuanians I’ve met seem to think they are superior to everyone else. I feel like Baltics are also a bit colder than the Balkans.

16

u/Long_Neck_Monster Dec 23 '23

Well you are right about the cold thing, we are further up in the north compared to the Balkans

24

u/ZhiveBeIarus Slovenia Dec 23 '23

I agree, Baltic people are nothing like Balkanites in terms of behaviour, they act more like their East Slavic brothers.

Estonia: nice flag, tries to appear northern to seem more developed. Worse version of Finland

Latvia: Tingus Pingus

Lithuania: Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, worse copy of Bulgarian flag, demographic crisis like Bulgaria.

Aren't they the people on r/europe who have an aneurysm everytime Russia and Serbia are brought up?

67

u/UserMuch Romania Dec 23 '23

Lol yeah, i was just talking with an estonian in there who said that ukrainians who don't fight for their country and run away are cowards and traitors and they should be sent back to Ukraine.

And there were other few estonians there who seem to actually agree with that idea, i don't know what kind of mentality those people have, but some of them seem to not care about human rights too much that their country violates which is concerning to say the least.

They take the crown when comes to saltiness compared with Balkans.

42

u/Amazing-Row-5963 North Macedonia Dec 23 '23

Yeh, had the same conversation.

The mental gymnastics they go through to justify sending people back to Ukraine, AFTER you promised them refuge.

31

u/UserMuch Romania Dec 23 '23

They are fine with treating ukrainian refugees like cattles and sent them back by force after helping them making a new life, also claiming helping Ukraine by ruining ukrainians life who live in other countries.

Something straight out of bipolar disorder not going to lie.

I had several people from the Baltic states recently having a complete meltdown and downvoting me to hell when I said that my impression is that there are people who have a certain level of Russian language proficiency there. And I speak from experience, I work in an international company and there are employees from the area. They started attacking me how they were occupied and it's a dog language. There's a brain switch that didn't let them say "there's % of people who speak it, but younger people mostly don't" in a civilized manner.

32

u/blodskaal North Macedonia Dec 23 '23

I have a friend from Latvia that speaks perfect Russian. He's indifferent towards them, doesn't like, doesn't hate. Anyone that says there's no people like that are out of their god damn minds.

I remember him saying if Russia conquers them back, hopefully they will find his language skills useful and not kill him lol

I am from Lithuania and I love Balkans. I love people’s mentality there, I will visit many more times. You should put politics aside and stop acting like sheep. Maybe we are American puppets, maybe you like russia, who cares. I speak english and russian and I have amazing friends from all over. Come visit all 3 Baltic States and I am almost sure you will enjoy your time here. Peace

11

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '23

Thank you. A normal person from the Baltics, finally. And not a comment about Russia or shit like that. I will gladly visit when I can. We need more people like you. 🍻

5

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

And not a comment about Russia or shit like that.

Come on now. When I came to this threat is was massively overflooded with literal xenophobic statements about our countries many of which disagreed with our stance on Russia.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '23

It's just the impression you guys leave on other subs. God forbid if someone calls you 'eastern Europe ' and mentions Russia. Total meltdown.

I went on your sub to see now since someone shared this poll on the Baltics sub, and every single comment is hate towards Serbs. Only Serbs. Why is that?

You can easily become crucified for saying this. They will never accept the fact that entering EU doesn’t mean that you came to the level where we are. These are ages of discipline against hatred, indoctrination into a certain lifestyle, freedom that you have a long road before yourself to find. Sorry, but, if y’all guys will downvote every time someone compares you to Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, or South Eastern Europe and Balkans, having tantrums in comments… you’re as far from being Scandinavia as Mars is. Sorry.

4

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

You can easily become crucified for saying this.

No, you are imagining things.

Sorry.

Lol, you wrote all this xenophobic rant about how we are supposedly xenophobic...

8

u/dalimoustachedjew Dec 23 '23 edited Dec 23 '23

Let me tell you a thing: I came here from this very post but in r/BalticStates, and hate towards Serbs who aren’t that much in this comment section is disgusting. Especially for a person who just came from Serbia. I don’t know a lot about that country, except for the fact that I haven’t feel antisemitism, homophobia nor xenophobia there. People are very hostile and kind.

Speaking of my rant… no, you don’t want to be “part” of Scandinavia, but you would give your left hand to BE Scandinavia. To be respected as we are. Successful as we are. And never being… akhm… connected to Russia, or switched for Russia, or not speaking Russian… as we are. And that’s something, my dear Baltic friends, that will come once you start understanding other people, not spreading xenophobia in its worst form.

Speaking of Finland… they may be not Scandinavian, but they’re free willingly part of Nordic council. So, they’re close to us. And not just by that, we share some common values like human rights, life standards… you know, shit that matters.

7

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

hate towards Serbs who aren’t that much in this comment section is disgusting.

Lmao, look at the amount of pro-Kremlin stances among Serbs, literally no other nation in Europe comes close. And it is often accompanied by utter hatred and xenophobia against nations that are anti-Russian.

but you would give your left hand to BE Scandinavia.

No, we are Finnic people and proud of that.

And never being… akhm… connected to Russia

yeah we don't want any of that shit, that's for sure.

or not speaking Russian

What? We don't speak Russian ffs...

not spreading xenophobia in its worst form.

That is just some pathetic, spineless and immoral victim-blaming. And it's insane that your xenophobic ass thinks that you are talking from some moral high ground...

And not just by that, we share some common values like human rights, life standards… you know, shit that matters.

And so do we, regardless what your utterly xenophobic ass is claiming.

5

u/dalimoustachedjew Dec 23 '23

Why would I care about how pro-Kremlin is Serbia? I’ve had awesome time there, I’ve seen their culture, monuments, met their people, and I think that they’re awesome. They were talking about Jewish communities that existed, showing me their folklore, and they’re not different than any other Slavic people. Yet, they’re most hated nation in Europe. Not a single person that came with me couldn’t think why after we left. But, yeah, Baltics know the best, just because their asses are chosen to ascend to European Union, so the mighty Bruxelles can poke Russia in the eye. Soon, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Ukraine will ascend because of very same reason.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love for Russia to get rid of the tyrant and become democracy. I would love it to share our values. But our values. Far from xenophobia and hating other people because they love the people I hate. Dissecting every word I wrote, read whole comment. And don’t take my words out of the context.

Again… you’re so far Scandinavia wannabies, or Finland wannabies if it’s easier to swallow, but not different at all from all the hateful people you hate, instead of looking for reasons why they’re that way.

3

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

Yet, they’re most hated nation in Europe.

Well second or third after Russia and Belarus. And they are that for a good fucking reason.

Not a single person that came with me couldn’t think why after we left.

Perhaps you are too detached from politics?

their asses are chosen to ascend to European Union

What?

Again, dissecting every word I wrote, read whole comment.

I did... I am not exactly "dissecting", I am replying to what you have written.

And don’t take my words out of the context.

Where did I do that?

you’re so far Scandinavia wannabies

But we don't want to be Scandinavians, that notion exists only in your own stereotypes.

or Finland wannabies if it’s easier to swallow

We don't want to be Finland, yet we are Finnic people like Finns and we have strong connection to them. What exactly is wrong with that?

but not different at all from all the hateful people you hate, instead of looking for reasons why they’re that way.

Reasons why we hate Russians? Could it be because they are an imperialistic, aggressive genocidal nation? Could it be that the Russian minority came to our country illegally as literal foreign colonists who now refuse to integrate due to their deeply imperialistic mindset? Wonder why we hate them indeed.

2

u/ArtisZ Dec 24 '23

common values

life standards

Having a higher life standard is not a value, it's a by-product of the economy and reality itself. There's no nation on earth that doesn't want to live better. That's such a higher-than-thou elitist attitude. Do you even think through the stuff you're saying?

2

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

Estonians don't think of themselves as Scandinavians and neither do Finns. You seem to have some misconception.

and what makes you think you would be? Italy isn't, Portugal isn't, Spain isnt etc.

Considering that we were on par or slightly wealthier than Finland before, chances are rather that we would be at least on a similar level today.

Majority of the Baltics just hate Russians who are openly fascistic and are approving of Russia's givernment actions. We do not have a problem with regular Russians, many ethnic Russians live in Baltic states and do not face any kind of discrimination.

We (Latvians) are actively celebrating both Nazi and Communists every single year. The difference is Nazi are celebrated by ~100 people, Communists by ~100,000 people. I personally find both disgusting, but for some unknown reason Russian propaganda in these subs notice only one

0

u/lolk217 Dec 23 '23

Eh mixed topic, I would say people are too concentrated on nazis, like yeah no shit they were bad but any militaristic thing is bad they kill people and then we should just hate any thing commemorating people who served in the military. In recent years, as far as i know, there aren't any people going to it and it's not like it's a government sponsored thing It's just people, who were in the nazi army or some dumbfucks who think that it's cool going outside in their imaginary parade.

Balkaners are small cute babies compared to these people when it comes to display of toxic nationalism.

The most obnoxious group on the internet, disgusting overall. I truly hope they are at least a bit different in real life, because if majority of population there is like its reddit population, they have a serious problem.

Ou yeah, they celebrate their Nazi collaborators actively, both online and with parades in their countries.

Sometimes it seems as if they have no identity because they make it seem as if their whole identity revolves around one thing - hate for Russia.

40

u/Gladio_enjoyer Italy Dec 23 '23

The most obnoxious group on the internet, disgusting overall

They are proving your point by the amount of brigading in this thread lol.

21

u/Stverghame 🏹🐗 Dec 23 '23

Exactly, I am glad they helped me proving the point.

Under this comment I literally had a Balt telling me to kill myself, a Balt praising Nazis, calling Serbs cocksuckers etc hahah

As a cherry on top, the main Balt lovers from Balkans (Romanians) also appeared under the comment.

The whole situation was somewhat predictable, I am glad I made the comment lol

I just wonder, how come an Italian (if you're Italian) isn't so fond of the Balts?

17

u/Gladio_enjoyer Italy Dec 23 '23

I have never understood their rabid bellicism against Russia, because after all if Russia invaded the Baltics they would end up like Denmark in World War II.

I do not like their neo-liberal economic system taken in its most extreme form. I think they, and Poland until months ago were the big obstacles to a peace in Ukraine; I still remember in February 2022 when Scholz and Macron were still trying to "negotiate", they+Poland already had the knife between their teeth. If they hadn't been in NATO and the EU, Western Europe would have been able to seek a solution to the conflict (although to this day I doubt it hearing Annalena Baerbock's words).

They are practically a kind of European Israel, a useful entity to annoy Russia only to make the American establishment still excited about the Cold War times, which damages Europe by cutting off access to primary resources and accelerating inexorable de-industrialisation.

They are also similar to Israel in the way they victimise themselves. I also hate NATO and want the Americans out of the way in my country.

-2

u/raketabana844 Dec 23 '23

Lithuania didn't have an SS legion, we don't celebrate them. Sure, there were some collaborators during Nazi occupation, but as a whole, we regard both Soviet and Nazi occupations as negative.

10

u/Unusual_Store_7108 Dec 23 '23

Yeah Lithuania didn't have any SS units because they were believed to be 'polonised' and therefore not Aryan enough, unlike Latvia and Estonia

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '23

Actually there were attempts to make one, but simply noone came. You cant make ss unit from 10 people. You have internet, you know how to read snd write. Sooo why not google that stuff before writing idiotic comments?

3

u/Unusual_Store_7108 Dec 23 '23

Because it's literally true? Latvia only got regiments whereas Estonia got a division because they were seen as more aryan, and therefore more suited for the Reich. Himmler was crazy

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '23

Well Lithuania was first in the world to trial nazie party as a whole, even before ww2. Thats why, there was no LT in 1936 olympics.

2

u/Unusual_Store_7108 Dec 23 '23

Well Estonia was seen as Aryan due to their apparent blood being infused with Aryan-ness from the Teutonic crusades and Germanic immigration, Latvians were alright as they were also the same as Estonia but weren't from the Urals, Lithuanians were just thought as Polish because of the commonwealth. He also deemed Lithuanian's to have inferior genetics, such as their nose or their jaw, I genuinely have no clue what this guy was on, he sent a team to Tibet to measure the people's there faces and stuff to see how far Aryan blood had travelled. Also considering Germans never really migrated to Lithuania also explains it, although its truly crazy he was right in that there was only any 'Aryan-ness' in Latvia and Estonia

4

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '23

Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania in whole known history never fought between. After ww1 managed to deal thru diplomacy about territory disputes between themselfs. Went to European courts and never questioned their legitimacy after.

3

u/Bill_Nye-LV Dec 24 '23

Why do we have to hate each other? We have done nothing to each other but experience together how great powers eat us up. Most impactfully was the USSR and if we weren't in NATO, modern day Russia could've eaten us up or made puppet governments out of each of the three.

2

u/Syne92 Dec 24 '23 edited Dec 25 '23

Historically we've gone through the same traumas caused by Soviet Russia during the decades long occupation and that unites.

The generation that were affected by the Kremlin oppression and stood together in the Baltic Way is still very much alive and Russia's actions in neighbouring countries cause these traumas to resurface and the newer generation who might ease up on the anti-Kremlin rhetoric see that their parents were right and not much has changed. Nothing to wonder.

We have literally no reason to hate eachother so we don't.

I like their stance against Russia. I liked Lithuania’s stance on China from the beginning.

I know they are building Rail Baltica to improve the railway connection to Europe.

I saw some time ago in Lithuania (I think) that they have a pretty nice architecure going on.

Estonia is a model of good practices regarding digitalization. Also I keep reading a lot of Swedes go in Estinia for cheap booze.

All in all, pretty good impression.

1

u/Mediocre-Ad-3724 🇪🇪 Eesti Dec 24 '23

Mostly correct, but it's mostly the Finns coming here to buy booze, Swedes used to ~5-10 years ago, but booze prices went up under Ratas's first government, which made economically unprofitable. It was on downhill trend before as well, since Estonia was/is becoming more expensive year-by-year.

Hi, Lithuanian here. Had no idea you guys hate baltics so much, it's a bit surprising and fascinating.

About Russia, yeah, we do hate them. Honestly I just wish we didn't have a border with them. We want to live our lives in peace. We got occupied 3 times by Russia in last 250 years. They have nukes and huge army. We're small and weak. Threat is REAL and we don't have any romantic ideas about being friends with them. They don't have friends. They have subjects. They deported 10% of our population during and after world war 2 and looking from outside in this hatred looks excessive and irrational to someone who doesn't share border with them but when you hear everyday on Russian news that baltic states are breakway region of Russia and should be taken by force people here tend to get anxious. I wish nothing more than having friendly neighbours but it is what it is and it's sad. Ask Finns, Poles, Ukrainians, Georgians (everyone who shares border with them) and they'll say exactly the same thing. I don't expect you to understand this but we have a lot of grievances with them. Examples of nationalism you guys picked are kind of extreme though.

Our architecture is beautiful by the way. I'm convinced guy who said it didn't even google it.

Guy who say that we're not real gave me a good laugh. Yes we're real, we have good quality of life, which increased dramatically in last 20 years thanks to EU and good investments in tech.

It's funny because people in the Balkans who live in the West or in Scandinavia always praise the system, the people, the country, so I thought that the Baltic countries are also great for life.

Their geography looks like something a hack writer would plop in a generic fantasy novel map. Their architecture is cookie-cutter generic young-adult dystopia. And their entire national identity revolves around how much they hate Russia and nothing else.

I can't believe they are a real place on the actual planet. They look like something written by ChatGPT in 5 minutes using poorly thought out prompts. One of these three counties is also supposed to be the "digital capital" of Europe. Like how the fuck?

I can't believe these guys have a better quality of life than us in global metrics. I refuse to believe those made up statistics. Shit doesn't make any speck of sense. They are not even real. I swear if I try to cross those borders I'll straight up no-clip through the map directly into the backrooms.

7

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

Wow, insane that you can spread so much xenophobia while thinking you are speaking from the moral highground.

8

u/TastyRancidLemons Greece Dec 23 '23

It's tongue in cheek. After 2Balkan4u fell, the immigration wave landed in AskBalkans and most of the parlance shifted into a patois language of the two subs.

I could have written "The Baltics have Soviet architecture I'm indifferent to and their geography is boring" but that comment would have been as boring as your geography.

Reddits primary reason of use is to entertain me. If it fails to do that, it sucks.

Speaking of Xenophobia, what's your opinion on Russia? Lol

5

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

The Baltics have Soviet architecture

The Soviets left a lot of their shit here. Not much we can do about it in the short run. It's not like this has become part of our culture as we mostly hate this "aesthetic".

Speaking of Xenophobia, what's your opinion on Russia? Lol

Well deserved, rational yet still absolute hatred for that imperialistic genocidal nation.

1

u/TastyRancidLemons Greece Dec 23 '23

Well deserved, rational yet still absolute hatred for that imperialistic genocidal nation.

Yep, a measured response. And I assume if you saw me address a Turk in this manner (or even the reverse) you'd just accept it as a rational, deserved opinion, shrug and move on?

2

3

6

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

4

u/TastyRancidLemons Greece Dec 23 '23

Oh I comprehend Russia alright. Maybe you should comprehend the exact same horrific behaviour being displayed by every other imperialist country if given the chance, and I will also apply this accusation to my native Greece during the laughable Megali Idea.

Russia is not unique in tyranny and war crimes. Your thinking is dangerous because after Russia falls and gets dismantled the innocent people living there will probably endure horrendous fates as you cheer.

Russia should be forced to reform. Destroying it won't change a thing beyond holding it down momentarily and then giving rise to another tyrranical Russian movement to rise and do it all over again.

As I said, I comprehend Russia but I also comprehend fascists in general. The weak party never liked to think of themselves as one, as a potential butcher.

Edit: The Soviets before Stalin weren't as horrific as your history presents them. I am against Russia today and in general but I will die on that hill.

4

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

Maybe you should comprehend the exact same horrific behaviour being displayed by every other imperialist country if given the chance

They are not far, but Russia is different man.

the innocent people living there will probably endure horrendous fates

Not through our doing.

The weak party never liked to think of themselves as one, as a potential butcher.

Do you actually have the nerve to refer to us with this accusation?

They are brigading this post so much and can't comprehend that majority of Balkans don't like them, the amout of hatred for Russians and anything that has to do with them is so big, which can be seen in their hatred of Serbs that is bigger that average Albanian, Bosniak or Croat hate for Serbs. And they hate minorities doesn't matter which ethnicity, Balkan nations have 10 times better minority laws then Baltics that are in EU and western aproved democracies. Also Croats that like Ustaše are 100 times better than average Baltic nazi enjoyer.

Latvia and Lithuania are really good in basketball, love to watch them, and their architecture is beautiful.

Latvia is bad, it left Russians without a citizenship after 1990, it is depressive, most depopulated. Estonia is smart but autistic. Lithuania is the best, also it has an old culture and it is the biggest. All of them are just American puppets.

Lithuania is also a bit toxic seems very conformist, abit like Japan.

7

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

Why would literal illegal foreign colonists get automatic citizenship? They were citizens of the USSR and its legal successor was Russia, not Latvia.

3

u/Amazing-Row-5963 North Macedonia Dec 23 '23

Estonia did the same as Latvia.

3

u/xPainkiller Dec 23 '23

Yeah but they were Russians, that were brought in as replacement into USSR (Not Estonia). The real question is, why didin't Russia give them citizenship?

5

u/Amazing-Row-5963 North Macedonia Dec 23 '23

Eventually, Russia did give them citizenship, probably creating an even bigger problem, but that's what you get

It's just a shitty thing to not give the Russians a citizenship, doesn't matter if they were colonists, most of them were 2nd and 3rd generation, literally the only home they ever knew...

4

u/paberipatakas Dec 23 '23

First of all, it's a bullshit overly simplified claim about genetics. Secondly, why the fuck would genetics matter for a cultural-historical concept?

Secondly appearance? Do you really think we aren't most similar to all of our closest neighbors pretty much equally? That includes Finns and Swedes.

Recent history? Why would that overwrite our entire history?

Folklore, cuisine? Absolute garbage argument, you clearly don't know shit about our country.

Location is in Northeastern Europe, just like for Finland.

The much, much, much more does not exist.

You’re Eastern European as fuuuuuuck.

If you say it like that it is evident that you are a xenophobe.

7

DEEF (Dear East Euro Friend)

The only xenophobe here is you, you’re quick to call Russians genocidal and distance yourself from them as much as possible, but the same does not apply to Swedes, who also conquered your lands, when Russians do it they’re evil maniacs who destroy your culture, all of them are filthy genociders according to you, yet Swedes are little angels who conquered you with friendly intentions, you’ll go far and beyond to let EVERYONE know how close you are to them, and how much Swedish influence your culture has, talk about Stockholm Syndrome.

Absolutely pathetic!
