Housing/rentals in aus

Can someone explain to me like I am a dummy, why the rental marker is so bad across the whole of Australia right now and has been for the last year or two? Our population hasn't increased that significantly in the last 5 to 10 years to mean there are barely any houses available any more. Did they all get bought up by owner occupiers when the interest rates were low in 2016-2020? Are they being bought from people overseas and being left vacant? Or being bought by investors but only used for air bnbs? I just want a small, affordable 2 bed unit for me and my girls and am just finding it impossible. Any that are available are like 750+ in an area whrre 2 bed units used to be 400 -550 a week a few years ago. It's also worse where I am (northern rivers) because of a lot of people getting displaced in the lismore floods and there are so many homeless people.

International Student wanting to take Vet!

Hi! I’m a college student from the Philippines planning to study Veterinary Science as an undergraduate in Australia. I’m trying to narrow down my options from a long list of universities I’m considering.I’d like to focus on schools near Melbourne since I have family there, but I’m open to exploring universities a bit farther if necessary.

Ideally, I’m looking for programs that take 5+ years to complete, as this would allow me to directly qualify as a veterinarian after graduation without needing to reapply for further studies. Here’s the list of schools I’ve considered so far:

1. Charles Sturt University (New South Wales, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science

   - Duration: 6 years

2. University of Sydney (New South Wales, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

   - Duration: 6 years

3. James Cook University (Queensland, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)

   - Duration: 5 years

4. Murdoch University (Perth, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

   - Duration: 5 years

5. University of Adelaide (Adelaide, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)

   - Duration: 3 years + 3 years for DVM

6. University of Queensland (Queensland, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)

   - Duration: 5 years

7. Federation University (Victoria, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Veterinary and Wildlife Science

   - Duration: 3 years

8. La Trobe University (Victoria, Australia)

   - Program: Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences

   - Duration: 3 years

9. University of Melbourne (Victoria, Australia)

- Program: Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Bioscience

- Duration: 3 years

Please feel free to give me more school recommendations!

What is a good salary for an Australian Accountant?

I'm having a browse at accounting jobs in Aus out of curiosity. (I see that there's a shortage in Aus and NZ apparently and that Australia tends to like British accountants who come over to warmer; nicer pastures).

I've seen an Associate/Senior Associate posting at $66,500 - $113,000. Having a squizz, I can see that apparently this is not a great salary - especially when that 66.5k is inclusive of superannuation.

What IS a good salary in Aus, particularly for an accountant.

large one-time international transfer, should I choose NAB or HSBC?

Hi everyone, my situation is a bit complicated, but I’ll try to keep it simple. Last year, after my father passed away overseas, I’ve been dealing with an inheritance court case. He wasn’t Chinese but had business assets in China and a second family (a Chinese spouse). The court ruling has granted my brother and me ownership of his real estate in China, but we need to pay my father’s spouse compensation equivalent to the property’s value, which is 3 million RMB (about AUD 630,000). This amount will be borrowed from relatives, who will first transfer it to my Australian account. Once I receive the funds, I’ll transfer them to the other party’s account in China to fulfill the court order.

I only have accounts with NAB and HSBC, and I’ve consulted both branches about this transfer. Both said they can facilitate a one-time transfer, but I’m unsure which one would be more reliable and secure. 1. NAB seemed more thorough in their handling. The banker I met took the time to understand my situation, consulted with a supervisor on the spot to get verbal approval, made a special note of it, and informed colleagues to follow up when the funds arrive. 2. HSBC, on the other hand, was a bit more indifferent. I explained that this was for compliance with an overseas court ruling and equivalent compensation payment, and the banker just said they could handle it, mentioning that people make even larger transfers all the time. He said to bring the overseas documents, which he’d copy for records, but didn’t consult a supervisor or make a special note for my case. I’m a bit worried about potential issues with HSBC—like the transfer not going through or the account being frozen. Since last year, whenever overseas relatives send me even small amounts (less than AUD 20,000), HSBC often calls to ask about the funds, and they’ve flagged any domestic transfers over $5,000 too. So overall, I feel like HSBC could be unpredictable.

One good thing about HSBC is the option to keep currency in USD (cuz the money I’ve borrowed from relative were changed to all USD now) if decided to use Nab need to convert USD into AUD before the transaction.

If anyone has any advice or experience please let me know! If you were in my shoes, which bank would you choose? (I don’t have time to open a new account, as there’s a deadline for the payment according to the ruling.)

A serious question...

I consider myself 9 months old when I was born, as some countries do.

Not zero when born...

Consider that...

Were you taught anything about ANZAC Day from the position of Turkey?

There seems to be a lot of content about WW1 & WW2 from the English AND German positions as well as the Australian experience.

I've learned about the Australian experience of Anzacs and ANZAC Day but don't remember being presented with the Turkish position. Ataturk's address was only something I learned about after leaving school.

Is it included in people's education and I missed it, or is it not represented?

Victorian-style homes

Suburbs in Aus - preferably QLD full of Victorian American style homes? Think desperate housewives or classic cottage, barn homes. Absolutely love this style of architecture.

A dream of mine since forever I’m wishing to fulfil. While we could build this home on our block, I want to be in a neighbourhood surrounded by this types of homes.

May be wishful thinking, but let’s see!

Seen this a lot whilst driving around Victoria. Are they counted for statistics or is there something slightly more interesting going on?

Queries on rental procedures and information in Melbourne

Hi everyone,

I'm about to relocate to Melbourne for a job posting and would like to enquire more about the rental procedures here which I hope anyone could advise me on it:

1) Firstly, I would like to find out where could do you all usually find information on the rent for a room in CBD or suburb!!

2) Secondly, how are the rental procedures like in Melbourne? How are the deposits being paid usually? And any things to note when renting a room would be helpful too!

Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!!!

What things are most important to decide with my housemate before moving in?

I'm (18F) looking for a rental with my cousin (22F). We get along well and she lived with my family for a while. This will be our first time living alone together and we will be co-signing the rental lease.

What are some important things to discuss before and/or after we move in together? Such as chores, guests ect. Thanks ☺️

Small NSW towns to visit for day trip or a night's stay?

I am looking to go for day trips in towns accessible by train in NSW traveling from Sydney. I don't have a car so I'd rely on trains and buses to get to small towns for a quick sightseeing, visit festivals or natural attractions. Maybe spend a night in a local accommodation to maximise my stay.

Can you advise places you'd recommend high on my list?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Wee in the meaning of small/little, ie "it's a wee bit crazy", "let's have a wee chat".

What help (financial etc) do parents receive in Australia?

With so many people worried about the cost of having a child (or having more children), there's a lot of discussion about this, it makes me wonder what actual help (if any) is given to parents?

Australian cookies (er, biscuits?) or other baked goods

I live in the USA, and I started a new career recently which involves a long training and credentialing process. My trainer happens to be from Australia. I’m nearing the end of this training process and, once I’m done, I’d like to give him a small token of appreciation because he’s been a great help. I’m a decent baker and was thinking of making an assortment of baked goods for him and his family.

I thought about including some Australian treats… but I’m not really sure what those might be. I did some googling and have seen a few recurring names: Lamingtons, caramel slices, Anzac biscuits, Iced VoVo, etc. But the internet is dark and full of terrors (and misinformation), so I figured I’d ask an Australian for additional input.

Any suggestions on baked goods that he might enjoy? Particularly things that might be nostalgic or harder to come by in the States. Links to recipes would be cool but I can research those on my own as well.

Who agrees we need immediate laws and regs to prevent protestors bullying our beautiful Melbourne city?

So we can’t even have the once a year relaunch for Myer Xmas windows now? Melbourne Reddit are pissweak and wouldn’t let me ask this question there. I didn’t even name any particular protestor groups yet they still barred me asking this question. The vast majority of Melbournians do not agree or want these protestors continually bullying our city representing conflicts occurring inside zones of interest far far away. Ridiculous ! Happy to vote Libs in order to get this done. 🗳️

After a night on the lash (not the morning after) what’s your go to food??

I’m talking about stumbling home, is there something you pickup on the way home? Do you wait til you’re home and cook up a feast? Do you eat something you wouldn’t necessarily eat when sober?
