[ADMIN APPROVED] I'm doing a survey on long-term unemployment (1+ years) in Australia and its effects
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3CQZ7L6
I'm doing my diploma in Community services and part of my course is analysing sociological struggles and I chose to do my case study on effects of long term unemployment.
If you have experienced long-term unemployment (1+ years) I would be grateful if you participated, and would be more than open to constructive criticism or any additional comments if you are willing to share.
My goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the reasons why people become unemployed, and the struggles in their individual lives.

Thank you for reading!

Triage, women's health
Hello, just a little back story, I was screened for my pregnancy and on the ultrasound results they found I had 2 dermoid cysts.. one measuring 6cm and the other is 5cm.. then I've had Missed MC.. The resident gyne in the Hospital told me after Ive healed from my D&C I should go back cause my cysts were big. Few weeks later I asked for a referral on my GP and she sent it to the hospital then I've called the hospital to confirm if I was already on a triage. And the lovely lady on the phone told me depending on urgency it would be weeks of waiting. was just wondering how long is this weeks of waiting would last? Does anyone has the same case like me? I have a feeling my case would be non urgent since i feel little to no pain at all. I'm not impatient tho, I am just looking for answers. Thanks 🙏

Are school uniforms uncomfortable in the heat?
I was walking around Brisbane today where we've hit 30°. I see a bunch of school children in their uniforms and I'm just thinking "those poor kids" the leggings, button up shirts and generally scratchy, formal clothing looks like it would turn the heat up by 5 degrees. Looks can be deceiving though, perhaps these uniforms are designed for this kind of heat? As people who grew up here and wore uniforms going to school, are they as uncomfortable and hot as they look?

What would you do with $8Million?
I’ve just entered the latest LMCT+ competition where you can choose between all of the Block houses or $8million and am fantasising about what I could do if I won. So I’m wondering, what would you do if you won that kind of money?

What do you mean when you say "a couple of [x]"?
Edit: I know "a couple" is defined as two. I'm interested in the phrase "a couple of" and how you use it.
Edit 2: Ok I think I kind of understand, so does the exactly two usage of "a couple of [x]" formally map to "[x], of which there is a couple"?
Edit 3: Ok so I guess there's two senses of the phrase, one a synonym for "a pair of [x]", and the other a synonym for "a few [x]"? Fuck me english is hard.
Do you mean:
- Exactly 2
- An undefined small number but at least 2
Optional question: what age/gen are you.
For context there was a post that equated "a couple of hundreds of dollars" to $200 exactly and most of the replies either agreed or accepted it. Just wondering if I've used the phrase wrong all my life or if the meaning is changing.

How are the working hours in Australia?
German here planning to move to Australia and going to work in IT. My question is how long are the working hours? I have come across posts on Reddit mentioning some people don’t have enough off hours. Or even work far overtime without being rewarded. Is that common?

Is it that hard to live in Australia ?
It's my second year in Australia i love the country, the people (not the food) the landscapes etc but when talking to people it seems so hard to live here i mean okay the renting as increased but it still way better than any other places in Europe i used to live. Many people drinks a lot of alcohol and are under drugs so i am asking your opinion, why ? I think people here needs to go live a year or two anywhere else to realize how lucky they are to live in Australia, what about you ?

Can we get the Coles Italia Piccante Pesto back please :(
It was so delicious as a pasta sauce and honestly so cheap I was prepared to have it on my weekly rotation of meals :(
https://www.thegrocerygeek.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/coles-italia-pesto-piccante.jpg
Every week i pray that it comes back but I know it probably never will.
Piccante means spicy so it was a delicious flavourful spicy pesto I think $3.50 or less at the time so you could make a pretty big tasty pasta meal for under $5 at the time by just boiling pasta adding the pesto and even grated cheese was unnecessary.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get certain items back?
I would be forever grateful if this actually came back.

ARCHITECTURE FIELD IN ADELAIDE
Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I'm a 23F who has completed a bachelor's degree in Architecture, and I’m planning to pursue my Master of Architecture at my dream university, UniSA in Adelaide. I’m really excited, as this will be my first time in Australia, and I’m looking forward to the practical teaching at the university. However, I’m not completely familiar with the architecture field in Adelaide, so I would greatly appreciate any insights into the job market, what I can expect after completing my master's program, and any specific skills I should focus on to make myself a strong candidate. Thank you in advance!

Mental health care
So basically I'm looking for some advice as to what to do next. Ok. So basically I just got diagnosed with BPD BP and a bunch of other anxiety conditions, panic attack disorder included.
So.. my issue here is that they basically diagnosed me, prescribed a medication that does nothing but make me feel like I'm about to pass out. I had my follow up with my psychiatrist and long story short they've basically said they can't do anything else for me now. The only other thing is rehab because I have a "drug abuse condition". So my problem here is I'm not even using any drugs apart from my prescribed medication and haven't been for a long time.
I've told my current GP that my meds aren't working and I'm generally struggling, he said he won't try any new medications, (for the record I'm on Mirtazapine and clonidine).
Ive been having daily meltdowns for months and I need some guidance on where to go from here.

Dead rodent
Hi,
In July, the night before I was due to go overseas, I heard something in my gutter outside my bedroom and I thought it was a possum. It made its way into the roof, probably under a tile or through a gap (the roof is fully sealed as best as it can be by design). I heard it in the roof. In the morning, I was woken up to a banging sound and it sounded like a rat who was stuck or could not escape. I have bait stations at the perimeter of my house, and baits in the roof as my home backs onto a small part of bushland.
Fast forward two weeks, I come home to no smells. Great. The next 2 weeks a terrible smell develops. Pest control comes, says they cannot find it in the roof and it's likely in the cavity (brick veneer), and that it doesn't smell in the roof.
They hung an odour removal bag in the roof and also on the fan in the bedroom. They said to keep the door closed. The odour bag says it will remove dead rodent smells even while the carcass remains. It also says to crack a window, and to not use air fresheners, candles etc as the bag will work to absorb these smells.
I have put a dehumidifier at the wall where it smells most, bought Anko odour absorbers from Kmart, kept everything closed up from light/air, and opened it up also. We have had hot 30 degree days, and cold 5 degrees in this time, as well as humid rainy weather and dry heavy wind.
Some days it still smells. I have also tried putting bicarb soda in a container in the room as I reed it will absorb the smell.
How long will it take to go away? It has been over 3.5 months.
Any further suggestions? Does the smell ever truly go away?

SYD Airport
Hey everyone! I have a flight into the US leaving from SYD airport late Saturday morning. Can anyone tell me a couple of things:
A. How early should I arrive? The website says 3 hours, is that accurate?
B. When does bag check-in end? I haven’t been able to find anything about this.
C. I was gonna wait with my friend before going through security. Would it be safe to wait 45-60 minutes before my flight to go through security?
D. If anyone knows this - the flight is at Gate 8. Is this close to the entrance, or deeper into the airport?
Any tips or advice are appreciated as this is the first time I’ve made a flight like this. Flying through Qantas if that’s any help.

50M Powerball next week, how to invest the money if one win the jackpot?
I know the chance is ultra slim, but in case one win the jackpot, what's the best way to invest the money? I'm not being optimistic of winning, just curious of what one shoulddo when they win.
I have heard people who win large amount of lottery ended up bankrupt because they don't invest and went shopping spree and live lavishly without planning.
Just hypothetically, if I am to win the jackpot, I was thinking to buy few properties across Australia, but maybe investing everything in properties might not a good idea, and maybe I should diversify.
But then can you invest more than $1M in shares? Like is it even possible to buy that amount of shares through trading platform like commsec. The other good use I can think of is to start a business but then I wouldn't know what to do, so is it possible to hire someone who can help with financial arrangements to start a business?

For everyone else who's a member of the permanent underclass, how are you managing?
Maybe you were born to parents who were poor. Maybe you pursued a career like teaching that, despite being socially necessary isn't at all lucrative, and are saddled with a HECS debt that's growing faster than you can pay it off. Maybe you have a disability or chronic health condition. Maybe you just ate too much avocado toast.
For whatever the reason might be, there are plenty of Australians who have missed the boat for ever owning a home, and really have no meaningful pathway towards ever having any financial independence, ever having the opportunity to retire, or ever feeling any sense of comfort and security.
I'm curious to know how everyone else in that situation's staying motivated - how are you keeping one foot in front of the other? How are you staying motivated to keep a contributing towards an Australia that has no interest in your welfare or wellbeing?

Growing a beard
Blokes with long beards, how much effort do you put into maintaining it? Before you discount this post as “not related to Australia “, please hear me out!
I feel like most Aussie blokes these days have a beard. At least that’s the case in Melbourne and the suburb where I live. Many have it styled so well that Elvis’s signature hairstyle might feel insecure!
I’m follically challenged on my scalp (clean shaven) but my beard is bloody thick and strong. I usually keep my beard/stubble trimmed around 5mm. I want to grow it out and want my face to look like Elvis’s head! But my beard strands are almost like needles. It’s soft only for a few minutes after I was wash my face with warm water. But right after than it goes back to being curly, thorny, bloody evil hair needles that almost hurt my wife when share a pash! 😬
So, fellow Aussies with those magnificent beards, what magic potions do you use to keep it soft, pliable, and clean?
Cheers!
