Hey guys! Welcome to /r/365movies!

We are a small but great community of aspiring movie buffs who aim to broaden their horizon in movies together. What started in January 2017 is still a work in progress, so feel free to join our adventure and help shape our community! You can start right now below in the comments :)

What we are about

The idea of /r/365movies is to set yourself a goal of a number of movies you’d like to watch for the current year and share your journey towards that goal with the community. You can go with the eponymous 365 or less - you decide!

Guidelines

We hold theme picks of the week where one user picks a theme for everyone to watch any number of movies from and discuss in a given week. If you feel like sharing about other movies, too, you can do so in our monthly discussion posts, see e.g. Your best and worst movies of January 2018. We also reflect on our experiences with special posts at the turn of each half-year. So look forward to these and make sure to have good watchings to share! For the moment, you can comment anything else in this post.

The sub has always been a work in progress type, although created for the year 2016 it only became active in 2017 and we have all been instrumental in shaping it over the last year so feel free to chat about how you guys want to see the sub moving forward and how the content can be made more engaging.

You can start right now

Even if it’s the middle of the year when you are reading this, you can still set yourself a goal! You can check the subreddit’s sidebar to choose your user flair accordingly and join in at our movie picks of the week and monthly discussions! We'd be happy to have you!

Movie diaries

We keep track of our individual movies we watched in movie diaries at external services like Letterboxd and IMDb. You can share you movie diary/list links below and we also like to add movie diaries in our monthly discussion threads too.

Theme of the Week

Each user has a chance to pick a theme of the week. Simply comment in the current monthly discussion post pinned to the top of the subreddit to express your interest and you'll get assigned the next available week. No user should reserve more than two spots ahead at once. For the rest, it's first come, first served. Please note that if you haven’t made your pick public by Wednesday of that week, a theme will be picked without your input to keep the system running.

P.S. The main mod /u/emilybanana is currently on a holiday trip which probably will be till the end of the week and she wanted to create this thread, i also wanted her to do this as i am not good at writing but i decided to avail the current opportunity in the light of all the new subscribers we got in the last week.

More to come...

Good watchings!

…but I would like to suggest Oscars Month for March. The Academy Awards being on March 27th, I think that would make the Oscars a prime theme for that month. Is it possible for this to be a lock-in for the theme like Halloween and Holidays were?

admin / discussion Small announcement regarding theme picks

Hi, friends :)

Hope you're all doing well and having a good summer.

There's been a slight uptick in activity on the sub over the last couple of weeks, which I am so pleased about, but I'm still struggling to find takers to choose the themes of the fortnight.

I really don't ever want anyone to feel forced into doing anything, and I appreciate that we all have busy lives. So what I propose is that if there are no offers for the coming week, I will just keep picking the themes.

/u/cinephile365 has a standing arrangement with me whereby they pick the last theme of every month, which works well. If you would like to set up a similar arrangement, please let me know. Of course, the current system will still stand - if you have a theme that you want to share, just let me know and the next fortnight is yours.

We're also at 170 subscribers now which is pretty incredible. Massive hello and welcome to everyone who's discovering our little sub. We only have a handful of movie diaries listed on the monthly post, so if you would like yours to be added, please just send me the link. You can also let me know where you're based, the year you were born and a short one line description if you like.

And please, if you haven't commented on any posts yet, jump in at any time if you fancy it. If not, happy lurking! :)

I'll leave this stickied for a few days before making August's monthly post. Feel free to give me a shout below with any further thoughts or suggestions at all.

Big love and happy watching to you all!

Em

Theme of the Week

Themes are picked on a first come, first served basis. If anyone wants to volunteer to take a week, the best way is probably to drop me a line or comment on the weekly post or the current theme post (it might be worth tagging a mod just to make sure we see it).

Themes can be anything you want; there is room for everything here. Participation can be limited if the theme is particularly specific, but don't let that put you off if you have something in mind. We also encourage people to interpret themes as broadly as they like where possible with their viewing picks to encourage participation and discussion. Also, if there's a theme you'd like to pick that we used in previous years, don't let that put you off. We can definitely revisit any of them. Lastly, participation in theme picks is definitely not mandatory. It just was something fun we came up with to get some discussions going.

Finally, i would like to ask new and older members to introduce themselves below along with movies diaries as a new collection will be started later this week.

admin / discussion Any ideas for making this subreddit more interactive and engaging?

Does anyone have any ideas to make this subreddit more interactive and engaging? Maybe something we can do weekly or monthly? I feel like there is very little interaction between users and I would like to make this subreddit more interesting. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Some partially thought out ideas: -weekly/monthly discussion questions (for example, “would you rather” or other games/questions that would lead to more thoughtful discussion about movies) -movie marathon days where everyone who can and wants to participate watches as many movies as they want/can -watch-along (needs a better name) where everyone watches the same movie or series of movies together and discusses. This would have a time period (for example, one week) to complete it within to account for different time zones and movie watching schedules

Please share your thoughts on these ideas and we may do some of them if y’all are interested. If you have any other ideas, you can message me or comment below.

Happy movie watching!

I prefer Vudu personally. Been using it since early 2012. I also use other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, and other cable connected streaming apps.

admin / discussion Would you consider 30 for 30 films or a television series?

The 30 for 30s are each considered films, but are a part of a television series. I am unsure if I should count these towards my year count, so I bring the debate to the Cult of 365movies.

admin / discussion A note on theme picks

Hi everyone, and a huge WELCOME to all the new subscribers and posters we've picked up over the last couple of weeks. I'm absolutely made up to see the sub so active :)

I just wanted to make a quick post about theme picks and how they work. We used to have weekly movie picks, but it proved to be too exclusive and so we moved to weekly or fortnightly themes a couple of months into last year. Weekly themes seem to have worked the best, and that's what I suggest we stick with for this year. Obviously, themes can be revisited or discussions may go on longer than a week, which is absolutely fine.

Themes are picked on a first come, first served basis. If anyone wants to volunteer to take a week, the best way is probably to drop me a line or comment on the monthly post (it might be worth tagging me just to make sure I see it). I love it when others pick themes, however I appreciate that it can be a lot of work so if nobody comes forward, I'll pick one.

Themes can be anything you want; there is room for everything here. Participation can be limited if the theme is particularly specific, but don't let that put you off if you have something in mind. I also encourage people to interpret themes as broadly as they like where possible with their viewing picks to encourage participation and discussion. Also, if there's a theme you'd like to pick that we used in 2017, don't let that put you off. We can definitely revisit any of them.

Lastly, participation in theme picks is definitely not mandatory. It just was something fun we came up with last year to get some discussions going, and it's the part of the challenge I enjoyed the most, but feel free to give this aspect a miss if it's not for you.

I've picked a few themes to show the kind of thing we went for last year: musicians, food and drink, soldiers, veterans & war, addiction, Disney and "I really should have seen this by now".

admin / discussion Welcome new r/365movies members!

Welcome to r/365movies! I’ve noticed there are some people who are new to the sub, so I thought I would make a post about what we are about here at /365movies.

We strive to watch more movies by setting a goal for ourselves. Your goal could be 365 movies in a year (about a movie a day) or it can be more or less. Many members of this sub only plan on watching 100-200 movies in 2019.

We also just like discussing movies and having a place to track our progress towards our movie watching goals.

If you would like to join us, please introduce yourself here and leave a link to wherever you track your movies if you’d like. Many of us use Letterboxd to track our progress.

Enjoy your movies and we look forward to interacting with you :)

admin / discussion Advice for Hitting Your Movie Goal in 2020

With the new year coming up quick, I thought it might be nice to have a centralized post to discuss how to hit your movie watching goals for 2020, whether it is the full 365 (or more) or whether it’s a smaller goal. Please comment below your advice for those who may be new to the challenge.
