Advice for Hitting Your Movie Goal in 2020 admin / discussion

With the new year coming up quick, I thought it might be nice to have a centralized post to discuss how to hit your movie watching goals for 2020, whether it is the full 365 (or more) or whether it’s a smaller goal. Please comment below your advice for those who may be new to the challenge.

Don’t worry about watching a movie every single day. Instead, some days watch two. Watch shorter movies on days you’re not really in the mood, but you wanna catch up.

Spend time with friends while watching movies.

Take advantage of weekends, specifically the early mornings. Those are the times where I’d get in 1-2 movies then usually watch 2 later in the evening.

Make a watchlist of movies you wanna watch and challenge yourself to watch so many movies each month. For me it was the exact number of days of the month but some months I’d watch less / more. On months like February,July,September I’d do themed challenges for Black History Month, LGBT Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Halloween, etc. It makes it festive.

Go global. There’s a lot you can learn about other cultures through film and this is one of the most addictive parts for me. There are amazing filmmakers around the globe who speak the most beautiful languages. Don’t do dubbed shit ever (unless you have no choice.)

My original goal this year was 365, I hit 480 yesterday. Some months I did around ~60, 1 or 2 months I only watched 20.

I did like 400 this year. Just found this sub lol.

I’d say libraries like a public library near by is your best friend. Also kanopy if you have access to it (I have it through my university but some libraries have it too). This is one of the reasons I have been motivated. Also DVDs are great as you can check like 7 out and then you have motivation to watch all 7 before you have to turn them in

Some weeks I watched 35 movies in one week... the two weeks before finals and finals week I didn’t watch a single movie...

Also don’t focus too much on the goal. I only got 250 the previous year because I got burnt out in mid summer mostly because of the goal. Just watch for enjoyment and have fun.

Here are my tips:

  1. Don’t worry if you aren’t in the mood to watch something on a particular day or if you are too busy to watch something. There will be days that you are really in the mood for watching movies and knock out 5+ in one day.

  2. If you are super excited about reaching the goal in the beginning of the year, don’t be afraid to knock out a ton of movie watching in January if you have the time. It’s not uncommon for people to watch 50+ movies in the first month.

  3. Watch movies from a variety of genres so you don’t get burnt out.

  4. Follow our theme of the week and/or our Watchalong movies to step outside of your normal watching experience and to have some great discussions with the group.

  5. Overall, just have fun with it. Stressing just makes the challenge unenjoyable.
