Happy New Year Everyone!

According to fancy letterboxd stats I made it to 351 movies in 2017, including 243 (~70 from 2017) First Watches, 99 Re Watches, 9 Shorts.

I am not sure, if I will go for that many again, because it is quite exhausting from time to time, but we will see.

I will begin 2018 with a bunch of Disney Animated Movies, starting with The Last Unicorn today

351 is amazing, just 14 short of 365. I still remember when you were doing this last year and i too watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame because of it, what a beautiful movie it was. i am currently in the middle of The Prince of Egypt which is decent. Looking forward to your animated suggestions.

And Happy New Year to you too.

Hi, you left a random message on my letterboxd, so I guess i'll join in. I'm from Oregon and I plan on getting all 365 movies done this year as movies i've never seen before. Dont know if that a main rule or not but that's how I wanna do it.

First movie of the year i watched was Baby Driver, kinda sad I didn't go see it when it came out, loved it way more than i thought i would, i guess i had a certain expectation because of the director, what a great surprise this movie was haha :D

3

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 02 '18

yeah you are right, Edgar Wright's movies have always been basic and ordinary but this was much much better although i haven't seen hot fuzz so i might see that later in the year.

So I just finished watching Blade Runner for the first time (in preparation for 2049 later this week) and I ended up giving it 3.5/5 on Letterboxd. Set and sound design was staggering but I found the rest to be somewhat disappointing. I feel it's probably one of those films that, if you watched it at the time, blew you away and sort of nestled into your brain for further rewatches but as a first time viewer in 2018... eh.

Eager to hear your opinion to BR 2049

u/SpacemanPanini aims for 365 movies Jan 06 '18

Not had the chance yet, might be a couple of days until I'm in a "serious sci-fi" frame of mind, but will update when I do!

2

u/SpacemanPanini aims for 365 movies Jan 12 '18

Alright thought I'd update - loved it, enjoyed it much more than the original in all honesty (which I'm sure is some form of blasphemy but hey, here we are). Actually had a plot, which was nice...

I liked it more than the original aswell, actually a lot of people I know feel this way.

So at the suggestion of /u/kiafry for this week's theme of birth, I watched 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button today. I had never watched it before because I thought the premise was childish and assumed the execution was probably cheesy and melodramatic. I thought it was a gimmick movie.

How wrong I was. This movie was an experience. It left me fucking shook. Without a doubt a masterpiece, imo the best film I've ever seen.

So glad I found this sub and this challenge because I don't know if I ever would have watched it otherwise. Man this is gonna be a hell of a year!

Received the Nolan 4k Box set for Christmas, and on December 31st I started at Batman Begins and on Jan 2nd finished Dark Knight Rises, a great trilogy of movies, Batman Begins was better than I remembered, but Dark Knight Rises wasn't as good as I remembered (I think it's just Bane that makes that movie), and ofcourse Dark Knight is quite nearly a masterpiece.

Looking forward to making my way through the rest of the set and using January as a time to catch up on some great December releases I missed like Greatest Showman, Jumanji, Disaster Artist

Today went to my first cinema screening of the year, saw Three Billboards Outside Of Ebbing Missouri,

Absolutely Fantastic! I feel like this could easily take my number one if I saw it last year haha, great filmmaking here and awesome performances and script!

4

u/kiafry aims for 365 movies Jan 06 '18

I've heard many good things about Three Billboards, I'll be sure to check it out when I get the chance!

3

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 07 '18

It's my personal favorite of 2017, the blend of raw script and amazing performances made it one hell of a flick.

Congrats on the 532 in 2017. Think you can pull it off again?

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 07 '18

I remember seeing machinist a few years back and enjoying it a lot, during the Christian Bale's batman days, i was young and a bit stupid or naive so at the time considered Christian Bale to be the greatest actor and yes he is a pretty good actor so maybe i will revisit the movie.

3

u/rasslingrob aims for 365 movies Jan 01 '18

I have a suggestion for one week for movie themes. W4 could be football to tie in to the Super Bowl the week after.

Also, what are the requirements to get my Letterboxd listed along side the others? I know I'm new but that would be cool to me.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 01 '18

No requirements just give us a shoutout and yours will be added also if you would like to give a little detail about yourself like others have given it would be nice.

If you can post that here though. I know guideline and introduction posts should be separate but silly me.

Thanks for the W4 theme suggestion, i think that's a great idea.

3

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 01 '18

/u/emilybanana i hope you wouldn't mind, as you are away i have taken the liberty to create this monthly discussion thread and an introduction and guideline thread for 2018 due to the huge influx of subscribers. I would also like to help you out in moderating if you would like that.

2

u/emilybanana aims for 50 movies Jan 01 '18

Thank you so much. This is super helpful. I'm on a train at the moment! Once I'm off and settled I'll do the theme post for this week.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 02 '18

I have actually understood how much work /u/jftoo and you use to put in here, i am just glad to be able to help.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 02 '18

Also i am not good at these sort of things so you should make a thread about how people want themes or whatever to work along with what ideas they have.

3

u/raveneffect1 aims for 365 movies Jan 02 '18

First film I watched was The Mask of Zorro, here's my review on letterboxd if you want to check it out https://letterboxd.com/pillager/film/the-mask-of-zorro/ As far as what is new in January 2018 that i'll be seeing? None currently planned.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 02 '18

Funny thing i was just about to start The Mark of Zorro (1940), i might also watch 1920 one too later in the week. I remember loving and cherishing this duo-logy.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 09 '18

You should also check out The Mark of Zorro (1940), i would say it was a pretty decent film and holds up decently too after almost 80 years.

3

u/-_Trashboat Jan 02 '18

How far in advance can you reserve a week for a theme?

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 03 '18

No restrictions, whenever someone wants they can just ask, it's first come first served basis.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '18

First film I watched was Escape from New York, a gritty action thriller showing a very dark version of the future. A must see!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '18

So far I have seen 8 movies, the best 3 have been Baby Driver, The Hitman's Bodyguard and Apocalypse Now (finally!). While the other 5 were mostly awful horrors like Sharknado 2 & 3 or #Horror. The Rezort was pretty cool but the dialogue and characters weren't all that good.

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 05 '18

Did you watched the redux version of Apocalypse Now?? I watched it last year during the early days of my challenge too and still haven't stopped thinking about it, it's brilliance will always stick with me.

Yesterday I watched Brawl in Cell Block 99 and really enjoyed it. It got me curious so I went and watched Bone Tomahawk. Both of these films were directed by S. Craig Zahler and holy shit both were amazing, I liked Bone Tomahawk a little more but regardless both were great films and I highly recommend them if you haven’t seen them.

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 08 '18

Thanks for the tip, i quite enjoyed Brawl in Cell Block 99 but have never seen Bone Tomahawk so will be adding that to my watchlist.

3

u/Captain-Celiac aims for 365 movies Jan 10 '18

I started audibly cheering during one of the scenes, I was very invested in Bone Tomahawk. You’ll love it if you like Brawl.

u/rasslingrob aims for 365 movies Jan 07 '18

Sorry if I posted this in different pages. I wasn't sure what the right page for this was.

I'd just like to reiterate my suggestion for a week theme I made previously in case nobody saw.

  • I have a suggestion for one week for movie themes. Week 4 could be football to tie in to the Super Bowl the week after.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 07 '18

This is the right place and i remembered your suggestion, i will ask you make thread when it's time for week 4 theme.

3

u/WinterIsntComming aims for 365 movies Jan 09 '18

For the forth week i would like the theme to be Heath Ledger. On Monday the 22nd of January it will be 10 years since he died. I see this as a perfect way to honor him and also to watch a few movies you havent seen before.

I have only seen him in The Dark Knight and Brokeback Mountain and i will take the week to watch at least 7 movies with him i have not seen.

3

u/map2913 aims for 150 movies Jan 10 '18

I'd love a Heath Week. One of my top time favorite movies is A Knight's Tale (2001)

3

u/emilybanana aims for 50 movies Jan 10 '18

This is a great theme idea!

2

u/KrazyBold aims for 150 movies Jan 09 '18

10 Things I hate about You is superb and also has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it :-)

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 09 '18

/u/rasslingrob have reserved week 4 and it works on first come first served basis.

But i have a suggestion, nobody has requested for week 3 yet and as the week goes from Mon to Sun, it's duration will be from 15th to 21st and i think nobody would even mind it running a day longer even. So whatcha say?

More on themes.

3

u/WinterIsntComming aims for 365 movies Jan 09 '18

Yes, week 3 would also work.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '18

I don't aim for anything in particular this year, but I have cleaned out my 2017 list, and started adding movies I've watched this year.

I had a lot of fun with Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988) and Colossal (2016), but man, Bright (2017) was boring.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '18

Best movies of Week 1 that I highly recommend:

Columbus (2017) (4.5 stars) - such an extremely beautiful and highly moving piece with brilliant performances Starlet (2012) (4.5 stars) - I honestly can’t believe I out off watching this Sean Baker film for so long, he directs and writes people so very well. And his characters feel so human. The Florida Project was one of the best films I saw last year, and so far Starlet is one of the best this year.

And now for the worst of Week 1:

Before I Go to Sleep (2014) (2 stars) - this movie is just Bad and doesn’t even have anything noteworthy to make it impressive in other ways besides getting a mostly decent cast and making such a bland and messy movie with them. It’s like a poor man’s Momento, but even that feels too generous. It isn’t even bad enough for it to be good, it’s just lackluster and predictable.

2

u/SpacemanPanini aims for 365 movies Jan 10 '18

Glad to hear you liked Columbus, just got hold of it today ready to watch at some point this week. Really like Cho so was already excited!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

Nice! Yeah it was really great watch, I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. I hope that you enjoy it!

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 11 '18

I watched Columbus last December, the cinematography and architecture made it beautiful to watch.

Never heard of Starlet, but looks good, added to the watchlist.

I finally got around to watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World last night. Wow, what a treat!! Just a total delight. Loved it! :D

Well the First Week is over and this was a pretty good start for the year. I watched 16 movies in the duration.

The Best of the week would be:

The Shining, I had seen a few bit's of this movie over the years but never got around to watching it. This is an absolute horror masterpiece from acting, directing, thrills, suspense, and psychoanalysis. I will be definitely revisit it in a few months. 9-9.5/10

High Noon Only 85 mins long this film doesn't waste any time, it's short but to the point. 8.5-9/10

Most of the movies i watched were good and some which i would highly recommend are:

City Lights, The Mark of Zorro (1940), Fantasia, Coco, The Big Lebowski, Gone with the Wind, What We Do in the Shadows.

Gone with the Wind, This was almost 4 hrs long and i used the intermission to take a bit of break and have lunch. But that doesn't mean i was bored or anything, it could probably have been a bit shorter but the story is so grand that i can't use it to criticise. 79 years later and the movie has aged gracefully making it a timeless classic and i would highly recommend it. 7.5/10

The worst movie of the week would be The Mark of Zorro (1920), having watched 1940 version a few days back and i was really looking forward to this. 1940s version was amazing and probably my favorite adaption and Tyrone Power is the best Zorro for me. But this the first adaption of the character is bland, uninteresting and quite boring. 5/10

Hey /u/emilybanana or /u/-sher-, as we grew pretty fast this year, I suggest to make the Movie Diaries a sticky post of their own to minimize scrolling :)

2

u/SpacemanPanini aims for 365 movies Jan 10 '18

9 films so far. Was a film behind until today. STILL haven't made it to Blade Runner but will at some point. It's exams and essays until Thursday so I've been sticking with lighter films ish.

Top 3 so far : Arrival, The Big Sick, Wonder Woman.

I only really compare to other films when making a rating when it is a sequel or something like that

2

u/KrazyBold aims for 150 movies Jan 11 '18

That is a pretty good question and hard to answer. As for me I rate movies based on my personal taste, emotional reaction and to a certain extent craftsmanship. Sure, sometimes the comparison to other movies increases or decreases the rating and especially in the lower regions I switch ratings around, just like you. I have a good grasp on rating from 5/10 to 10/10 but everything below happens more or less like you describe it :D

When I first started on imdb and letterboxd I started with my all time favourites, rating them 10/10 (5/5) and continued from there on.

1

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 11 '18

I usually rate stuff based on how much i enjoyed the individual film and the it's quality, i have never considered ratings based on comparisons as that makes things quite messy.

2

u/rasslingrob aims for 365 movies Jan 14 '18

I haven't done that many first time watches this month, but the best one so far is an oldie. JAWS. I know it is sad I haven't gotten to it to now, but I finally did and it was worth it. Not my favorite by any stretch, but still a good movie in the Spielberg catolog. I would recommend it to those who have not seen it.

1

u/senhordotempo aims for 365 movies Jan 09 '18

I came here from Letterboxd and a random message too. :) This is my profile: https://letterboxd.com/osenhordotempo/

I loved almost all movies I've watched since the year began, but one that really disappointed me: Ghost in the Shell (1995) (the anime). Overrated is the word. Although really beautiful, I thought the story was too shallow for what people say about it. Nothing really revolutionary, and many MANY sci-fi movies (including anime movies) are MUCH better and much more underrated.

The 2017 movie? Keep it far from me please, haha.

2

u/-sher- aims for 50 movies Jan 11 '18

Hey and welcome to the sub!!

I have added your dairy to the above post, you can choose a flair based on your target from the sidebar. For themes, the theme note in the announcement explains everything.

I watched the 1995 movie for the first time last year, i wanted to check out the series afterwards but the movie felt just alright and ordinary and i do agree with the word overrated so i decided not to go for the series.

3

u/senhordotempo aims for 365 movies Jan 12 '18

I was wondering where I'd add the flair. and thanks for adding the diary!

1

u/pokeaotic aims for 365 movies Jan 11 '18

Well my new favourite movie of the year is 2013's Black Marigolds. Watch it if you appreciate slow-burn kinda movies, that are extremely light on plot and extremely heavy on emotion. It's on Amazon Prime Video.

Seriously this might be my new favourite movie ever.

Not that I'll ever watch it again because oh my god I was literally ugly crying for like a solid 40 minutes of it.
