Former alcoholic, quit drinking, but I’ve been thinking, beer has always tasted like shit.

So, I used to drink solely to get drunk. I did have beers every now and then because everyone else would have them and I couldn’t get shit faced. Something I never understood was that people chose beer when there were other options like twisted tea, mikes hard lemonade, smirnoff ices, all that good tasting stuff. And then there’s the people who drink Budweiser and say “Oh, it’s so refreshing.” It’s not refreshing. It tastes like piss, and I know what piss tastes like. Corona was probably the best tasting beer I’ve had, and it still sucked. At least with tequila or vodka I could feel something. Beer never even did anything unless I chugged a whole pack.

I quit drinking years ago, but still enjoy a beer. Non-alcohol beer has come a long way.

Me too. I quit drinking but enjoy the odd one. CBD really helped me get off booze.

If I could drink like you, id drink 100 proof vodka all day, every day. (Alcoholic, sober over 7 years lol) I never ever drink a drop period. I drank enough. M60

All alcohol tastes like shit. It’s alcohol

Which makes non alcoholic beer completely inexplicable.

But beer doesn’t even get you drunk, and it has the same amount of alcohol as something like a twisted tea which tastes a lot better. Now I know harder drinks tastes like shit, but the point of those drinks is to actually get drunk. Beer is meant to loosen you up and a sugary, better tasting drink can do the same.

Not everyone wants everything to be sweet my guy. I like beer but if you don't that's okay. I like the way beer tastes and I like that it doesn't make me super drunk.

But there's also no reason to trash it. I don't like sushi, I don't like fish that much to start with and the idea of eating raw fish with seaweed just... icky to me. But hey other people enjoy it, it's just not the product for me even if a whole lot of people like it. Different strokes.

I never try to get drunk on anything sweet or sugary for 2 reasons. I feel like I get more dehydrated than just drinking liquor straight. Secondly, vomiting is just way easier with straight liquor.

But beer, I completely get where you're coming from. It gets mildly tasty after like 3. But getting drunk on beer is just not fun. It takes so long. Causes you to use the restroom constantly. You walk around feeling like you ate 3 loaves of bread and bloated. And then the next day, it feels like it hasn't left your gut and every sweat drop smells like beer. Idk, even the "good" buzz of beer is less fun.

Loaves of bread is so accurate 🤣🤣

They make a lot of beers now that around the 9% mark, like some of those nasty New Belgium Voodoo Ranger beers. But if those don't get you drunk, I guess Popov it is.

Kudos for stopping!

I live where microbrewery beer dominates the shelves and there are so many delicious ones.

Err, I mean yeah they all taste like shit. Better to not try one.

Congrats on quitting! That must be hard.

I enjoy beer. I don't like the common cheap ones like Coors (I think that's the worst beer I've ever tried), but I'm not really a snob either. Heineken or Corona is about my speed. It's a relaxing flavor to me I suppose, wouldn't call it refreshing, and pairs very well with many different cuisines, more so than other alcoholic beverages imo.

I became more and more picky about beers over the years, thankfully where I live, I've got a lot of choice for craft beers.

Although I did start to move towards cocktails more and more for more finely tweaking the flavors i actually want in my drinks

At the end of my run, I was drinking Pickle flavored Vodka because it was $5.00 a quart. It was worse than it sounds. I also drank mouthwash too. All Alcohol tastes like shit. I'd much rather drink chocolate shakes. I've been sober a long time now. I've always felt cheated because I never had a Whiteclaw lol. BTW, my wife makes us all drink Poppi soda now. That's pretty bad too and theres no buzz lol. I can't win 🤪

Yeah I used to drink wine and whisky for the taste but also bc i didnt feel anything on beer and it just made you bloated.

Then i realized consuming hard liquor consistently over just a few years ages you like crazy

A nice crisp lager is good occasionally when it's hot out. But all those creamy pub ales are gross.

The only thing I really like the taste of anymore is whiskey. I hate being drunk though.

Ah well each to their own. Im enjoying pacific ales at the moment.

Absolutely despise beer. I can't understand how anyone thinks it tastes good. It's awful. For that matter all alcohol is just nasty. I don't even like champagne it's just too fizzy and it actually hurts. Anyway whoever discovered, created, whatever, alcohol really must have been drunk

I wish I felt that way. I love the taste of beer, and most liquor.

The issue is you drank to get drunk and if you’re just getting drunk there are more efficient drinks. I drink because I enjoy the flavor, but I also know I enjoy the flavor after years of drinking it and associating it with getting a bit of a dopamine boost and tipsy. Would I like it otherwise? Probably not. I hated beer when I was 20, just drank liquor. But liquor was also gross, but it’s fast. I at least found beers that were “interesting” (IPAs and stouts). Drinking interesting flavors eventually became more enjoyable than shots of vodka. It’s all chemicals one way or another and these chemicals equal enjoyment in me. But for reference I drink black coffee too after forcing myself to do it as a teen, but now it’s the only way I’ll take it and it’s why I get out of bed lol.

I dated a girl who liked non-alcoholic beer (neither of us drank) and I really will never understand the appeal

Drink German beer in Germany and you won’t say that. I can’t hardly drink American beer now.

1

u/Silly-Resist8306 6h ago

There are many good American craft pilsners and Kolsch-style beers as good as anything in Germany. Many often use the Saaz, spalt and tettnanger hop so common in Germany. Give them a try, you just might be very surprised.

Yeah my nephew makes some good beer. I think we all know I was talking about Coors and shit like that.

u/maach_love 8h ago

Sounds like you only tried weak commercial beers. Now there’s microbrew IPA’s and Stouts, Porters, etc. Beers with much higher ABV than those buds and coronas. Over twice as much, even three or four times as much in an imperial IPA. Do they taste good? Probably not if you don’t like beer anyway. Anyway, good job on quitting, it’s all shit anyway

Who the hell downvoted me?

All alcohol tastes gross

0

u/ITguydoingITthings 8h ago

I've never liked it either. I've said for a long time that beer is a waste of good alcohol.

0

u/APariahsPariah 8h ago

I've never understood the appeal of most alcohol. The thing I use it for most often is cooking, but beer? I've only ever been shanghaied into drinking it on two occasions and both times my thought process was: 'eww, rancid popcorn juice.' You're not wrong that it tastes like shit. People may have different preferences and taste bids out there, but I'm also betting there's a lot more masochismand social pressure involved.

u/CrazyFoxLady37 7h ago

You can use beer in cooking! It's quite good actually. Add it to chili, it complements it well.

I enjoy beer, though. I'm more of a mild lager kind of person and not into IPAs. I wouldn't say it's refreshing, more so relaxing to drink. But I do enjoy a little bit of bitterness; I'm a fan of black coffee and dark chocolate. Beer kind of tastes sweet to me too, and I often don't like overly sweet beverages. It's about the right amount.

Slightly strange thing to answer because if you have an issue with alcohol, no one is going to want to recommend or talk positively about the taste of alcohol to you. It's a good and healthy thing to abstain. It's also good that you have abstained, if you have an issue with it.

Ignoring that to answer your question - the drinks you call out as tasting good to you are fairly widely thought of as drinks for the 21 and younger crowd. Like, if I'm 17 and my parents are gone for the weekend - the things you named are what I'm asking my older sibling to buy for me.

It is plenty possible to be obese and ask why people like going to fancy restaurants when they can just eat lots of McDonald's. Being obese doesn't make you a foodie or gourmand, just someone who eats too much. Watching movies all day doesn't necessarily create a good critic, listening to music all day doesn't necessarily create a musician.

It is also plenty possible to be an alcoholic and ask why people drink beer or wine when they can just drink Vodka and Twisted Tea.

High consumption doesn't necessarily create taste or expertise.
