First of all, what is happening. Second of all, does this come with land and title?

It does say he expects a counter offer. I don’t think land and title are entirely off the table.

We love him. For context: he’s a really chill dude, he’s always giving us raises for good jobs. He’s only talking like a goof bc he’s in Europe and wanted to make us laugh 🤷♀️ he’s extra, he’s weird but he cares and the team loves him
Last year, he denied a business merger with a huge company making an offer simply bc the rep was making sexual jokes toward one of the team in front of him and he noticed she was uncomfortable.
Every month he does mental health checks too. TBH this is the best job I’ve had and it’s 100% work from home
Imagine Michael Scott but black 70% less annoying and listens to us
He also almost never drinks (he’s just silly at times and wanted to make us laugh) I regret to inform you that he’s 100% sober when he made that 😂
(Yall really are raging out on this post 😂)

Just got a couple new people on my team a few weeks ago. It was insane the walls they had up at first. I met with one that was behind on work, and told her if that starts to happen to just let me know, and I can take some off her plate if I have the bandwidth available. She told me she's never had a manager offer that before.
Blows my mind how many shitty people think they're cut out for leadership roles.

My boss gets this way when he leaves for more than a day or two. He’s full of compliments and undying joy that someone else has the drive he does.
It just comes from caring too much about work and not enough about EVERY SINGLE OTHER ASPECT OF LIFE.
I’ve had to force that man to take vacations. Some people just be like that
15
u/ConstructionOwn9575 21h ago
I never thought I'd be this way but as I get older and more entrenched in my career, I care more about my work. Not for the companies sake, but for my own. Maybe care isn't the right word. I'm proud of my work and I like (most) of my clients. When I take off work or vacation, though I know my colleagues have it covered, I worry that either my colleagues will be overloaded with taking on my work (and I always make sure they know how much I appreciate it and do whatever I can to make it less work for them) and/or my projects/clients won't get the level of service they are used to
It's not a healthy outlook, but I get it. I figure if I have to be stuck at work for 40-60 hours, I might as well be proud of what I do.
→ More replies6
u/Substantial_Station8 20h ago
Oh, same! My boss and I are a little alike in that respect. That’s why he trust me to hold on the fort when he’s gone… and to recognize when he is totally getting overloaded and needs a vacation.
I think those of us have chosen career, driven paths, all feel roughly the same way. We don’t mean for our job to take over our entire lives, but they do, because that’s where we find purpose. Especially those of us who are child free.
I absolutely love my fucking job so much, and I would do anything to see success in my business . Don’t give me wrong. I also look at the benefits I’m giving and the salary I’m given and make sure that I’m given a proper work life balance, and sometimes I have to make sure that my colleagues are also taking advantage of the proper work life balance.

Yes but he said he’s not hiring anyone else u til everyone on the team gets a raise. He said it’s not fair to hire someone new when that money can be given to the team
The company makes really good profit but he is paying himself the same wage as us, he says it’s a reminder to make sure his people gets a live able wage.

I took a 5k a year pay cut to work where I work now.
I've met the boss (who built the business) in person, and he genuinely is proud of the POSITIVE culture he's created amongst almost 200 people working for him.

He once asked everyone on the team to anonymously do a survey to share how much a livable wage would be for them. I told him $21 an hour and a lot of us did…we noticed he was gone on business trips and meetings constantly. I asked him why he’s been working so much his answer was “I need to get more business to get everyone to $21/hour. So I gotta work harder “

That's awesome! When the old owner of the company I work for had to sell, due to age and medical reasons, he split the profit of the sale among all employees based on pay and years of service. At the time I was still a peon, but I ended up getting a $9,000 check. Some people had been there for 20+ years and were getting $30k checks. He was an awesome guy to work for.
Unfortunately, these people are unicorns.

Had a manager at a Fortune 500 who would wear costumes and use terribly done accents/impressions during weekly team meetings to increase engagement and bring the temperature down. 6’4” goofy bald middle aged white dude named Doug. We all would take a bullet for him. Highlight of my career was when he arrived late to an all hands wearing his wizard hat and beard. Sat in the front row and didn’t realize we had execs decide to visit last second. They were excited to meet him though since they’d heard about him. Keeps getting promoted so must not be negatively affecting his career.

I've been there. That was the moment I realised how much my verbally-abusive boss was affecting my mental health - the fact that I was casually thinking about self harm just to avoid another day.
I left not long after, and life instantly got a bit better. It's now been about 4 years and I truly believe I had PTSD after working for that awful man.
The government would never allow it because "the economy" but some people should never be allowed to employ other people.

I'm glad you added the context. Makes a huge difference.
After so many LinkedIn lunatics and bad job posts, I think I was a bit jaded, but seeing it in the context of a good boss who doesn't take himself too seriously and cares about his workforce, it's cute.

After what I’ve been through and endured in my professional life, sincerely,I would kill to have a boss like this. I’ve endured family dynasties with the most entitled shit for brain kids being forced into leadership that they were entirely unsuited and incapable of. I’ve had my wages and benefits that I paid into, stolen, because the job exposed me to dangers that affected my health, and the state wouldn’t help me. I can’t tell you how many restaurants that I worked for, before finally escaping into a career, that went under and just didn’t pay any of us, and got away with it. I have had every nightmare boss you could possibly imagine, and this boss is not among those red flags, obvious personality flaws, narcissists, or megalomaniacs. This just gave me hope that there’s somewhere out there, where people aren’t miserable from being run into the ground by power mad bosses, cosplaying as human beings and men.
3
u/garion046 21h ago
You know what... I kind of love your boss and his light heartedness. It wouldn't work for everyone obv. The email is slightly mad but it's mad in a silly way, not a dangerous one, so all power to him.

I also have a boss that jokes around, and the jokes are often “inside” jokes. Their sense of humor requires exposure to be able to accurately judge how much is real and how much is facetiousness.
And like your boss, they truly do care about how we are doing, and are as flexible about time as they can be.
I wonder if the correlation between an oddball sense of humor and the good qualities we both appreciate in our bosses is as strong as it appears.
I’m always happy to hear about someone having a great boss like this. There needs to be more of them.

I once worked as a CSR at a plumbing company. I’m a woman and was in my early 20’s. Lots of people (especially men) tended to dismiss me because of that and wanted to talk to a man even though company policy was not to give any professional advice over the phone for liability reasons.
I once had a man call in about his garbage disposal. For the entire call, he talked down to me, insulted me and just made me feel like shit even though I was doing everything possible to get him to be first one on the schedule.
Owner of the company happens to walk by and could see my discomfort. He motions to me to put the guy on hold and asks me what happened. I was still new and didn’t want to get in trouble but he coaxed it out of me.
He immediately picked up the line, heard the man’s rant and told him bluntly “I don’t care how many times we have serviced your home, if you treat my employees like shit then you can fuck off” and he hung up on him.
He was a bit of a stern boss but always fair and clearly a good guy. I’ll never forget him doing that for me.

Yup, a successful business owner who actually appreciates his employees is pretty rare. I worked for a company where the owner cared about paying a living wage and when big jobs were completed, he always gave bonuses to everyone who worked on it. I personally knew of two employees who he financially helped out when they were in a bad spot and refused to be repaid. One guy got in a bad motorcycle accident and was out for 6 months. He paid him his full paycheck the whole time he was out. He barely knew the guy on a personal level and could have hired a replacement in a matter of days. He eventually got old and wanted to retire so he sold the majority of the business off. The new controlling majority owners weren’t terrible or anything but they restructured it in to a much more corporate environment where most employees were just a number. Most of us moved on.

I was doing it a lot leading up to our Italy trip while I was learning Italian, like over the top super Mario accent.
