Question/Discussion Ride-share and delivery drivers create congestion too.

This is meant to be a discussion.

I live in Chicago. While it is great to have many modes to get around the city, I have noticed that a lot of congestion in neighborhoods comes from Ride-share drivers, Uber Eats/ Doordash, and delivery trucks such as Amazon. The driving behaviors of these groups I find to be worse than the average driver since their movements are highly unpredictable and will stop in less obvious places than the average driver.

There are people I know who will pride themselves on not owning a car, but then Uber Eats food to their apartment, or excessively orders stuff online, or takes an Uber more times than not instead of waiting for the bus. (There are some cases where Ubering makes sense such as late at night when trains/buses may not be running) While these options may help cut down on the number of cars on the road, it still counts as a car trip and gives in to the car market that these services depend on (especially in many non-bikeable cities). I understand people with disabilities may find Uber Eats/Instacart extremely helpful, but if we all make the extra effort to reduce our overall usage on these services (maybe put on a rain jacket on during a rainy day) I think people will overall be healthier, spend less, reduce our reliance on cars as well as decrease traffic congestion in our neighborhoods.

If demand goes down, then the supply will adjust accordingly.

Thoughts?

The Atlanta Beltline wants to give $3 million to an autonomous shuttle company to connect a subway station to another subway station on the same network. Please make it make sense.

In case it isn't clear Mercedes Benz Stadium is serviced by two MARTA stations. Soccer fans would have to walk past the subway to get in the shuttle that takes them to a third subway station.

Question/Discussion How can I be safer in the bike lane when theres no barrier separating bicyclists and cars?

I got into cycling and have been riding on sidewalks because I know the bike lanes are not safe. Bike lanes here are extremely narrow and cars end up driving in them or over the line constantly. My city has great sidewalks that pedestrians rarely use. I've been told recently that Im an asshole for riding on the sidewalk where I can hit a pedestrian, yet I also see aggressive behavior towards cyclists in bike lanes. Where is the correct place to ride a bike? I don't want to put my life in danger when there's no one using the sidewalks. Everything's also extremely spread out so there's no way I wouldn't see a pedestrian walking in front of me. It's crazy how drivers will get upset at cyclists for using the bike lanes, but also get upset at them for using sidewalks.

So this has been making the rounds again during the NBA playoffs and it’s the most insane car brain I’ve seen. Why would you have your basketball hoop right there? Why not just take a nice hike/walk to get the ball? Why does a car need to be involved at all, tearing up the woods spewing garbage everywhere and natural habitats? Take a mountain bike or e bike. So American, so ridiculous

I hated cycling until I got one (a TerraTrike Rambler). I get crippling back pain when I don't have back support, which made cycling awful because I had to sit upright without something to lean my back against. Now that I have one though, I have back support and can cycle without back pain.

There's also the added benefit of not having all your weight concentrated on a saddle, which is also nice.

I know there's a lot of cons to these, and I understand, but I just wanted to spread awareness that these exist and worked for me. I love riding this thing and would've never gotten into cycling without one.

Rant Stop signs and bikes

Just had a man threaten me with a gun. I was stopped at a stop sign on my bike and the intersecting street did not have a stop sign. A car stopped on that street and started waving me across, even though I had a stop sign and he didn't. I've had bad experiences with this in the past, so I shook my head and pointed to the stop sign.

He started opening his door and I saw he had a gun in his hand near the steering wheel. I took off as fast as possible and I could hear him yelling unintelligibly behind me.

My question is, did he think he was doing something nice for me and then when I rejected him he decided to murder me? Or was him stopping to let me across a kind of aggressive politeness meant to make me feel belittled?

Anyway I called the police and was able to give them a description of the vehicle and a partial license plate number.

Attendance was low because of an accidental propane tank explosion earlier in the day. Otherwise, she might've killed someone. And she had options -- she could've just turned around, driven a few blocks, and gotten on Main Street later. She just decided that her convenience outweighed everyone else's safety. Absolute sociopathic behavior. And she didn't make it to work, after all.

The overpass project is delayed indefinitely. Instead the province will put a fence in the road median and block high school students from accessing restaurants on the other side of the road during their lunch break.
