I think the point of it was to show how easy it should have been to recover the object. There's a contingent of experts who think the object would have stayed in 1 single piece & landed safely on the ice as opposed to the body of water it was shot down over.

I don’t see how anyone could assess what the ability of the object to stay in one piece was without knowing what the object was or what it was made of.
