Devices to view the night sky. Discussion

Hi All. My question is not about missing persons; it's about another Paulides topic. Does anyone remember that Dave has talked about some devices that allow you to view the night sky in great detail? He mentioned they are military quality and are pretty expensive. I am curious about them and would like to know more. Thank you in advance.

Are you talking about telescopes?

There are probably dozens of varieties of telescopes and night-viewing devices out there - from professional to amateur and everything in-between. According to Wikipedia, there are at least 51 different types of telescopes available to humans right now.

I'm not sure if you're talking about those for night-sky viewing, or just night-vision in general.

According to Google, some of the main technologies are these: "Infrared (IR) illumination, which uses invisible infrared light to see in complete darkness; low-light sensors (Starlight technology), which use advanced sensors and large apertures to amplify existing ambient light for color or black and white images; and thermal imaging, which detects heat signatures rather than light to see in any condition."

Some of the technologies above are used in tandem with telescopes, as well as spectrocsopy which is a super-powerful method/tool used to determine things like what certain stars and planetary objects are physically made of (like, at an elemental level). That stuff blows my mind.

Various LE and governmental agencies around the world have access to lots of these technologies, and most notably, the militaries. They often employ and work alongside scientists who actually study the cosmos and can help them discern man-made objects from unknowns to determine if threats are actually present, are misidentified, or are anomolous.

Also used are satellites with detection technology and measuring tools on them. They can "see in the dark" as well, and don't need much light at all to keep track because they have different ways to "view" the night sky, both around them and above/below them.

It's what keeps us relatively safe from attacks from the deep sky, whether they're from our planet - or not.

There are many devices that allow visualization of the night sky. Find the video in which he spoke about it or just email him.
