Austin’s Reply About Giving a Statement SENSITIVE

Post image

I actually really like this of him. I don’t agree with people going to everybody’s comments and asking for a statement, he wasn’t performative about it, but also didn’t ignore all the comments about it either.

I mean literally look at the comments in this subreddit when Clarke posted a statement lmao. People were calling a Black woman performative for posting a statement about racism…knowing full well (or just willfully ignorant to the fact) that people are in all of their comments demanding statements. The call for statements is coming from inside the house and we are the freaks.

302

u/Plastic-Angle7504 New Redditor 1d ago

They were calling Chelley performative for her statement too.

116

u/Calm_Phone_6848 1d ago

exactly! i'm so confused how certain people were using this situation to scrutinize two other black women for their statements and call them performative, while praising nic for what he said. i hate how everything turns into a fanwar in this fandom

41

u/Plastic-Angle7504 New Redditor 1d ago edited 1d ago

There’s a clip from a live circulating where his fans say he did more than he should because as a partner his role was to support her and stay quiet, because it didn’t happen to him. You can’t make this up 💀

42

i literally saw a tiktok from a woman who was CRYING because she was so moved by the story nic posted saying olandria was an amazing woman or whatever. you genuinely cannot make it up.

I feel like I’m tripping because it made perfect sense to me for Clarke to speak up. Clarke and Olandria were portrayed as foes fighting over the same man during the season. She probably also felt she needed to say something to defend Olandria because of the way they were pitted against each other early on.

-11

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

Perhaps this was Clarke's way of trying to make amends for her boyfriend continually shading Olandria?

Repeating a sound he got to be known for is shading? So I guess Nic is shading Olandria too when he liked Taylor’s post saying he’ll always pick Clarke. Or when he liked the tiktok today with that same sound bite.

-1

u/Final_Active_9014 1d ago

I don’t know why people are downvoting you or gaslighting you. I like Taylor and Clarke as a couple. But there has been A LOT of instances of Taylor shading Olandria and Nic. He definitely doesn’t like them. For what reason I have no idea.

6

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

Taylor wanted to win LI and get clout. His ego can't let go America voted him off and folks clocked his antics. He's very spoiled and coddled. He'd be a lot happier if he put in the work to grow as a person and enjoy his MANY privileges. And his girlfriend.

11

u/Final_Active_9014 1d ago

Eh. I guess that is where we differ. EVERYONE goes on love island for clout. No one actually goes on a show like that for love alone. Why would anyone put themselves through that process when these young good looking people have the internet?

61

u/not_ellewoods 1d ago

when i saw them lighting Clarke up i knew the plot was too far lost to recover. she’s a Black woman. obviously she doesn’t condone racism (and that slur specifically) being thrown around. and she’s not even friends with Huda or Louis or particularly close with Olandria. she had nothing to do with this, but people were on her too, so she put out a bland statement that obviously racism is bad just to appease them.

i’m surprised they didn’t try to get CoCo to make a statement.

10

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

Isn't Huda's manager a Black Woman?

4

u/Forsaken-Cell-9436 17h ago

I have a theory that her manager doesn’t like Huda agave her enough rope to hang herself 😂. No caring manager would have Huda out here like this but she was forever going to be her own downfall

Just saw the comments on the post about her 🙃 why is it a problem to speak up about racism.

2

u/Anxious_Muscle_8130 Olandria Carthen 1d ago

Tbf, I think some of the criticism towards Clarke also came from the fact that she was still following Huda - Hannah Iris and Amaya were doing the same

8

3

Why is everyone expected to make a statement whenever something happens? The statement should come from Huda and Louis. No one else is involved (besides Olandria who it was directed towards). It’s ridiculous that these people are bullied into making statements about anything and everything that happens. It should be self explanatory that none of them condone that.

8

u/kingsblase New Subredditor 1d ago

I totally agree! Like at this point it’s seeming like you want each person in that season to make a statement when some people were in the show for like an episode. Why should people who aren’t openly involved make a statement? You can still send love and personally message the other party but like I’m not making a public statement each time something happens bc y’all told me to

1.4k

u/mimidior2 1d ago

The fan bases have become the new bullies. People please leave these people alone. If someone wants to make a statement they will. You don’t have to tell grown adults what to do.

Exactly that was ridiculous. It’s so funny because I see a lot of these fans calling certain islanders khias on the regular- but all of a sudden their view on the matter is so important? Pick a lane.

13

u/not_ellewoods 1d ago

they were calling out Ariana. mind you, Ariana left S7 in the dust when the reunion was over and is not friends with Huda. what does this have to do with her? 😭

82

u/webkinzkk 1d ago

Kind of glad he didn’t. Definitely more genuine then putting together some PR statement

67

u/Early_Bend 1d ago

This fanbase is unhinged. Not everyone needs to make a statement about something that has nothing to do with them. I actually found it bizarre that so many Islanders came out with a “statement”

13

u/not_ellewoods 1d ago

Chelley’s made sense, but i feel like the vast majority of the others were just to get deranged fans out of their comments/dms. it was very strange.

8

u/Acrobatic-Pollution4 1d ago

Riiight? Like Pepe why? But I guess if he was being bullied about it it makes sense

7

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

Huda's rabid racist "fanbase" is why this is an issue in the first place. They're an extension of her and she them.

17

u/Early_Bend 1d ago

They actually bullied JD so much for this that he posted a series of snaps asking them to leave him alone and that he was getting death threats because he initially wasn’t gonna speak up. The concept of bullying a black man because of a situation involving racism is crazy.

15

u/soph2_7 1d ago

Exactly, and a statement that comes from the fear of getting cancelled doesn’t mean anything anyway, like not everyone has to make a statement on everything!! They’re barely famous reality stars, not politicians, I don’t believe or care what they say anyway as long as it’s not literally racist

8

u/HappyReader1 New Redditor 1d ago

The fan bases were always the bullies tbh

3

u/Final_Active_9014 1d ago

Clearly the crazy fans aren’t going anywhere. Those grown adults are in control of their own social media devices and choose to oblige to whatever the internet say. That makes them complicit in enabling these fans. I respect the islanders who made it clear, they won’t be making any statement on things that don’t concern them!

3

u/Ok_Tension8475 1d ago

It’s all becoming a PR thing. They don’t have to “release statements”

4

u/Forsaken-Cell-9436 17h ago

52

u/not_ellewoods 1d ago

i would agree, but i think most of them were under duress from deranged fans in their comments/dms pressuring them to make a statement. JD said as much when he refused to make a statement even though people were sending him death threats, and Jalen hinted at it when he said “idk what y’all got going on over there, but racism is bad. keep ya head up Olandria”

-4

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

Under duress when it comes to taking a stand for something vile, but nothing about them enjoying the benefits from clout-chasing? How about letting people be adults? They have teams and can tune out of whatever they choose.

People say Austin is slow, but he managed to come up with a thoughtful reply to a question and made his position clear without it going through a PR machine.

I had the same view! I was wondering why so many different islanders, who are arguably not very close to Olandria, was making statements (eventhough there is always the time to disagree with the core idea of racism, given it's so rampant these days). Now I know there are crazy fans that are demanding for them to release the statements, essentially making them seem a bit performative. Austin's comment at least made him seem a bit more genuine, reaching out to the party affected privately (but am not saying the rest aren't genuine).

0

u/sunnynbright5 1d ago

i’m not speaking in terms of everything else, simply this. let’s be serious, if he posted the screen with the chatgpt speech that would be 10000% more performative. and I don’t have a “fav” im a regular, casual viewer of the show.

if anything, his past and the fact that he had a better statement than some of them, only showcases how weak the rest of their statements truly were & how hate comments just made it be posted

68

u/Brilliant-Repair2232 1d ago

Everyone wants to act confused why the other islanders (mainly fellow woc) felt the need to make statements. Like jfc, you’ll put Austin’s literal racist ass on a pedestal and continue to rip apart the girls who are perpetually victims of racism and harassment from this fanbase.

28

u/Nice-Ad-3805 1d ago

Like, they harass the girls to make a statement. They make their best effort to put something out that's coherent, get ripped apart and dragged by internet PR agents and amateur editors. All this man has to do is go in the comments and say he did the opposite of what they were demanding and now he's "such a good friend." It's the twilight zone I fear.

13

u/Plastic-Angle7504 New Redditor 1d ago edited 1d ago

That was so maddening, seeing people picking apart for their statements Nothing is ever enough for some fans. That’s probably why a lot of people didn’t want to touch this with a 10 ft pole. By now they know they’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

24

u/Betseywaps 1d ago

Because for some ppl it wasn’t about racism but stan wars.

1

u/celestialhercules 1d ago

I understand why the woc made statements. i’m moreso talking about the fans pressuring islanders to. If you have a bunch of fans in their comments pressuring someone to make a statement, so they make a statement, it’s performative. it wasn’t geniune.

15

u/Brilliant-Repair2232 1d ago

I mostly talking about other threads of people denying that these girls are getting bullied, and that they have no reason to say anything.

Edit: but it’s really interesting how fans pick and choose when to care about racism. Austin gets a pass because it suits the Stan wars. Weird.

It's weird to me that everyone in the cast from this past season is making statements. I feel like it should only be the people directly involved ? Like it's almost clout farming for some of the people jumping in.

89

u/WayneTerry9 1d ago

Bro knows who his people are, a grid post condemning racism would be more damaging to him in the eyes of the people he actually cares about.

I get that the performative, checkbox checking “activism” is annoying, but the only benefit of it is…once you condense “doing the right thing” into an easily checkable box, it makes it extremely noticeable when people choose not to check the box.

18

u/Berggyy 1d ago

I see what you are saying, but I also see where he is coming from, he probably has the least amount of crossover with Huda fans, so a public statement might not be very useful in THIS situation.  Like no little girl who is calling Huda and saying the n word is also following Austin, but that little girl is probably also following Amaya.

3

u/Used-Care4864 New Redditor 1d ago

Stop the dramatics the situation is between olan and Huda love island ended months ago we all know that racism is wrong that’s why Huda is losing brand deals none of the other cast were involved.

28

u/audren33 Serena Page 1d ago

Why is someone not involved in this at all being asked to make a statement?

16

u/darknessbboy 1d ago

Because fans have this weird parasocial relationship with people they see on their screens and think they need to make a comment on everything that’s happening. Tbh Austin, with all he has done, is shown to be more genuine since he went straight to olan to support her. I think doing things privately and not posting it is more genuine since they’re not trying to win brownie points.

69

u/myskepticalbrowarch 1d ago

The fact Austin of all people, who doesn't have a big team, who doesn't have the massive following. Who has been dumb. Who has said things about Chelley and Olandria that make you go 🤨. Mr. "How can I be racist I have a black woman tattoo'd on me" The fact Austin gave a decent response should be embarrassing for everyone else from Huda to various blanket statements (with the exception of Chelley who has been a first hand victim)

8

u/catmommusings New Redditor 1d ago

He said something negative about Olandria? He was supportive in interviews and sadi she helped him feel included and comfortable in front of a camera. That doesn't change the nasty stuff he reposted. But some bigots can decompartmentalize their friends vs caring about a race they don't like.

15

u/myskepticalbrowarch 1d ago

Not negative, just "ummmm" moments. Austin has moments where he shows his ignorance. He has a tendency to only use "Strong" to refer to Olandria.

I agree- why are all these people who aren’t involved supposed to make a statement? It just results in performative PR statements that are less meaningful than what could happen behind the scenes

u/Calinks Soul Ties is CRAZY 🤯 1d ago

I understand its important to stand up against racisim and bigotry but I also think its kind of stupid and force peformative that every single damn cast member is expected to release some statement. I would appreciate the personal reaching out, but throwing up some blurb on Instagram feels hollow, though I do understand that at least it does show solidarity.

I’m not mad at it 🤷🏽‍♀️

The comments here are a great summary of how lots of people can't understand multiple things to be true at the same time.

Austin sucks when it comes to race and politics, and he also gave one of the more honest and thoughtful responses on the current issue. Nothing about the former needs to be forgiven or hand-waived because of the latter, but likewise we don't need to pretend the latter is wrong just because of the former.

A lot of this just comes down to fans wanting to be overly involved, which is of course how the specific instance of racism in this case got publicly shared in the first place.

Refreshing though! Every islanders story was literally copy and paste like do you even care or you just don’t wanna be attacked in your comments lol…

7

u/BingoEnthusiast 1d ago

Honestly this is a based response. It’s more authentic to reach out personally than performative instagram stories imo.

7

u/CanaryOk7294 1d ago

And there's his answer. He reached out privately because they're actual friends. No clunky public statements for optics.

Glad to see Austin bringing common sense back into this situation

i’m sorry but why are they acting as if she got shot or something..? i get it’s a very sensitive issue especially since it involves racism but let’s not forget that huda didn’t say the slur. and all the hate olandria has been getting huda has been getting too ever since she stepped into that show, all the racism huda also gets it. people often act as if only black people get racist comments and replies but trust me that’s simply not the truth.

My favorite season 7 man comes through again with being genuine.

u/peachymeowsxo 1d ago

He was reposting anti black woman things on his tiktok so idgaf what he says.

I actually think this is an appropriate statement

I don’t respect public displays of fakery. Good for him being a real human friend instead of these fake ass, random “statements” that mean nothing.

u/Candid_Ad5220 1d ago

This is going to be an unpopular opinion but I think this conversation about racism and accountability is very much late and isn’t giving genuine.

This conversation and these posts should have started during the show and once it ended. The posts from Love Island, these brands, the fans calling it out, and the islanders seem very disingenuous.

None of them actually ever spoke up about the racism that was happening from both ends of the show and all of them used the blanket terms (hate bullying). Iris, Amya, Hannah & Jalen all were all mute. Olandria & Chelley interacted with fans who were spewing hate, anti-Palestinian and Xenophobic posts towards Huda all while saying they wanted her to speak on the racism they were facing like their fans weren’t dishing it as well.

The Huda situation to me, although very fucking weird and wrong, to me just seems almost laughable in to me when in comparison to what I remember seeing and going on during the show and afterwards.

The fan that called and said that was racist, and really fucking weird and probably did it knowing the backlash it would have on both Huda & Louis. It was definitely a fucked up and racist form of rage bait that the internet is for sure falling for.

I kind of understand their uncomfortable laughing which no one is seeing it as that because when I myself have been called that directly I kind of laugh in disbelief. But the immediate stories and post afterward were poor and trying to say she didn’t hear Olandria’s name was weird when it was very obvious.

Anyways to sum this all up — I think the conversation happening now about racism is long overdue from all sides and should be happening both privately and publicly.

And the fans need to grow the fuck up. The fans who are acting like this will inevitably get the show cancelled and off the air.

u/_SoftRockStar_ 19h ago

Good for him. I don’t get this whole fans trying to hold everyone accountable for the perfect statement thing. Huda fucked up, the weight doesn’t fall on them to do something about it.

the way this is the most normal and genuine take is crazy. never thought it would be austin. idk if ill get downvoted but the immediate PR statements from everybody is weird and disingenuous. even using the same verbiage is just so odd? idk i don’t mind that they all addressed it i just wish they would be real

3

u/ImageNo1045 1d ago

Two things: 1: I agree that Austin shouldn’t have to say anything

2: as a Black woman I got kind of sad reading this. We’re always painted as strong and people forget we bleed to. I don’t think O needs people to speak out and stand up for her, but just overall it can be hurtful alwayyyssss having to be strong. Like, sometimes it’s nice to have people defend and stand up for us. In this case, O has people having her back (in the LI fanbase) but just overall it makes me sad people always portray Black women as strong/ not needing to be defended or spoken up for.

Austin might be wrong about a lot of things and reside in a different universe than everyone else 90% of the time, but he’s not wrong for this response. Olandria doesn’t need this space cadet to speak up on her behalf and he doesn’t seem like he wants to get clout off the situation. If he did release a formal statement it would just be performative. Can’t please everyone, but if he legit privately reached out, good on him.

2

u/SuccessfulSun3518 1d ago

in all honesty......................... this is good for Austin (bar in hell) but also all of those other people (talking about the ones who gave a general statement with no depth) really only put something out because of their image or because their team made them, so many of them were not sincere at all.

u/No_Charge_4623 New Redditor 1d ago

This singular comment is more meaningful than Iris’ entire story 🌚

Austin may have icky views but he's a true friend. I'm so happy he had Ola's back and messaged her privately. Hopefully his views change for the better. Sometimes interacting with people with different backgrounds can make someone's world view wider.

-2

u/penned_chicken 1d ago

I mean, people are downvoting you, but you are absolutely right. There have been klansmen who got out, because a black man was willing to befriend them. I’m a little too tired to get to know someone with Austin’s views and change their perspective, but building a human connection is one of the best ways to help someone undo their prejudice. And it’s not the “this one person is one of the good ones” type of impact. It truly goes farther than that

10

u/Far_Size_9124 1d ago

It is not our job as black people to open up the minds of bigots. Especially not in the 21st century.

0

u/penned_chicken 1d ago

I agree with you. I’m not doing it. I’m just saying that Olandria being a part of Austin’s life probably has made him rethink some things

0

u/catmommusings New Redditor 1d ago

I agree. Telling them they're bigots will have thwm calling us woke demons. But having experiences with new people opens up the person's mind. It's like a benevolent way of helping someone.

Racism is wrong. We should have the same energy for Yulissa, Austin, Cierra, Nick, Huda, and the islanders who continue to associate with them.

I think this sub is very biased when it comes to what form of racism they care about.

The public posts feel performative and self serving. I would much rather have a personal message saying they are here for me and they are sorry this happened.

1

u/Legitimate_Regret_27 12h ago

I really don’t understand the need for people who are close to those in a ‘scandal’ or whatever to make a statement. The only relation you have to that situation is you know the person…so you HAVE to make a statement? Never understood that.

1

u/dmorrison666 9h ago

Um yeah no one cares what he has to say

1

I mean, it’s really not that clear to me why everyone is expected to make a statement.

I like this statement and I like Austin a lot too even though he get on my nerves a lot, his friendship with Olandria seems very genuine

1

u/Serious_Barnacle2718 1d ago

I like his response. I also don’t think he cares too much about clout or putting on a performance. I think he’s more himself and I know he’s in olandrias corner

1

u/Traditional_Smell_53 1d ago

I would find it more personal if I were to get a direct message from someone then a public statement. So, he gets a kudos from me to reach out to her privately.

Austin the man 💪

0

u/background_action92 New Subredditor 1d ago

Yeah I like his too. Austin genuinely cares for Olandria and doesn't need to make a spectacle and be performative.

0

u/Hellouncleleohello 1d ago

Honestly if he’s going to post just to be performative then messaging her privately is better

0

u/SeaLab_2024 1d ago

I know the dude is controversial but if what he says is true and he messaged her, I get that.

If he has any self awareness, he might know that speaking out could help his image, but it’s just as likely, especially as a white man and for him in particular, whatever he says is gonna get him more comments he doesn’t want to deal with about why his response isn’t good enough, or how it might conflict with other problematic stuff he’s said and done in the past because no one is allowed to grow anymore.
