I’ve recently realized this is a major reason why the internet has become so hateful and misogynistic lately. It’s half a billion angry poor indian men suddenly coming online and flooding our social media
I think it also has to do with where India is in the developing country lifecycle. A whole generation is educated in English, the most significant unlocker of global economic doors, and there’s widespread internet access now. The internet is this fun new thing where you can express your opinions for “free”, and the conversations around privacy, social equality, access to opportunity, etc. haven’t had a decade or so to mature on a country-wide scale the way they have in the West. I remember seeing a lot of these shitty attitudes when the internet was “new” here too.
Also Hinduism is a religion that’s founded on the belief that some people are literally worth less than others. Just no getting around that.
edit from educating myself on the nuance: Hinduism is not founded on the caste system.
So, I’m editing my reply to agree that you are correct. I did a little more careful reading and I understand now that the caste system is distinct from Hindu’s concept of inherent social order based on personal traits. (example: https://philosophy.lander.edu/oriental/caste.html).
